Primary Objectives of
Position
1.
Liaise, assist and advise, where necessary, academic and
other support staff to develop and maintain resources for
teaching, predominantly within the dental simulation
laboratory, at the Chadstone campus.
2.
Assist in the delivery of practical teaching by preparing
equipment and specimens suitable for associated classes.
3.
Provide specialised technical support to the oral health
teaching program.
4.
Provide support with administrative duties as they relate to
the dental laboratories.
NB: It is expected that employees will work within the Institute
policies, procedures and other legislative/regulatory
requirements, including AQTF requirements, OH&S and equal

The Laboratory Manager essentially liaises with the
academic staff in the dental programs. This revolves
around program requirements in terms of laboratory and
technical support.


Departmental administrative staff and laboratory assistants

Liaison with other Departments and Property Services in
relation to laboratory requirements and maintenance.

Liaise with OHS Officers within the Institute.
External Communication
Requirements

Charles Sturt University Bachelor of Oral Health team.

Liaison with external suppliers of goods and services.
Specific Accountabilities
1.
Development of resources to assist the Oral Health
(Therapy/Hygiene) Program to deliver a quality product to
students.
2.
First-line identification of malfunction of simulation
laboratory equipment before, during and after simulation
sessions.
3.
Setting up of the Simulation Clinic in response to
instructions by academic staff.
4.
Stocking and restocking simulation areas with
consumables and monitoring use of same.
5.
Instrument issue and return.
6.
Inventory management.
7.
Preparation of instrument and consumable orders for
signature by academic staff.
8.
Development of section procedures and production of
related documents (includes safety and standard operating
procedures, risk assessments and legal requirements).
9.
Assist lecturers with the supervision of students during
simulation classes and compliance with all ethical and
OH&S requirements.
10.
Maintain a professional attitude and high educational
standard with clients, prospective students and visiting
schools by being willing and able to describe facilities and
functions and to answer competently any questions that
may arise.


Note: Due to the above, annual leave is available in
non-teaching periods only.

Qualifications
11.
Cleaning of laboratories and equipment as required,
including dangerous substances. This also encompasses
safe disposal of chemical and biological material.
12.
Develop and manage laboratory documentation systems,
inventories, equipment location lists, resource materials.
13.
Maintain a safe storage, handling and disposal system for
all materials including chemical and biological material, and
dangerous substances in accordance with Holmesglen
Management System.
14.
Inspection, maintenance and correct use of safety
equipment and laboratory furnishings and equipment.
15.
Assisting with organisation and operation of effective and
safe procedures for the maintenance of laboratories,
equipment and materials in accordance with institute
policies and procedures.
16.
Maintain and enforce a safe working environment for all
clients in accordance with local and Institute OHS rules.
17.
Ensure all aspects of the Holmesglen Management System
including AQTF requirements that relate to the position are
followed.
18.
Advise the Head of Department on physical resource
requirements and the budget implications.
Minimum
Certificate IV in Dental Assisting
Preferred
A relevant degree in a dental, medical, life science area or a
related discipline (and relevant work experience).
Knowledge
Experience
Skills

Knowledge of the correct and safe operation of a wide
range of laboratory equipment and materials, their storage
and handling.

Knowledge of and ability to apply Equal Opportunity and
OH&S principles.

Experience within a higher education teaching
environment.

Demonstrated experience in the operations of a dental
simulation laboratory.

Experience in liaising with external organisations and
suppliers.

Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and document
policy and procedures.

Current Victorian Driver’s license and ability to travel if
required.

Knowledge and proficiency in standard laboratory practice
(experience in a dental simulation laboratory would be an
advantage).
2.
Proven ability to work as part of a team to provide students
and teachers with optimum facilities and support for
practical work.
3.
Ability to establish effective business relationships and to
liaise with both students and academics to achieve
educational objectives.
4.
Demonstrated ability to effectively manage time, use
initiative and work with a minimum of supervision.
5.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the
ability to liaise at a variety of levels.
6.
Working knowledge of the use, maintenance and purchase
of simulation laboratory equipment.
NOTE: The Incumbent may be required to perform his/her duties
at any campus or location controlled by the Board or elsewhere
as directed.
