AQUATIC BIOLOGIST/MICROBIAL ECOLOGIST NOAA – Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory Ann Arbor, Michigan We seek an enthusiastic research scientist with experience in environmental microbial biology/ecology in aquatic systems with specialized skills in molecular biology. The candidate will be expected to develop a research program within the NOAA Center of Excellence for Great Lakes and Human Health. This center has several projects that focus on water quality, beach closing and harmful algal blooms. This position is for a microbial biologist/ecologist with cross training in molecular biology. It requires a demonstrated research ability in aquatic microbial problems. Experience with aquatic food webs as well as human health issues is desirable. The individual should have expertise in application of molecular tools and methodologies to address problems. The applicant should have demonstrated experience in molecular techniques such as cDNA cloning and gene expression, phase display libraries and combinatorial library screening, and/or genetic engineering (transgeneic organism) with experience in the development and application of PCR to environmental samples. The applicant will employ or transfer molecular techniques developed in other fields, primarily medical research, to problems of aquatic biology and ecology as they apply to food webs and human health issues in the Great Lakes. Excellent communication skills are required to convey complex molecular biology/ecology to researchers of different backgrounds. This is a full time permanent federal position at the GS-13 level with a starting salary of $77,161.
