IEEE MICROWAVE THEORY AND TECHNIQUES SOCIETY
Undergraduate/Pregraduate Scholarship Program
Description
The IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) will award up to ten
undergraduate/pre-graduate scholarships each for the fall and spring semester. The purpose of
these scholarships is to attract BS and MS students to the microwave and RF discipline, and to
encourage them to pursue a job in the field or a PhD degree in this field.
The award consists of:
1. $1500 cash award. Funds may be used for project materials and/or stipends
2. Certificate of recognition. There is a Student Awards Luncheon held on Thursday at
every IMS conference to recognize student contributions to the MTT-S Society.
3. One year IEEE and MTT-S student membership
4. Travel supplement (up to $1000 USD) to attend the next IMS or an MTT-S sponsored
conference (e.g. European Microwave Conference, Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference,
etc.). The travel supplement is available upon request to the Scholarship Chair prior the
conference. This additional financial support is paid on the basis of receipts and does not
include expenses related to registering for the conference.
Eligibility
1. Applicant must be a BS, BS/MS or MS student in electrical engineering (or related field). The
time of application (Fall or Spring) should not coincide with the semester in which the student
graduates. The student must identify a faculty mentor who will supervise the applicant’s project
or thesis work in the microwave/RF area and verify that the student will not graduate during the
semester of application submission. Alternatively, project work may be conducted in conjunction
with industry, but a faculty mentor must still be identified.
2. The faculty mentor must be an IEEE MTT-S member.
3. There are no citizenship requirements.
4. There is no limit to the number of applicants from an institution. However, awards are limited
to one per faculty mentor.
5. Applicants are permitted to compete for the award more than once. A given student will be
awarded this scholarship only once.
Application Procedure
The required documents are:
1. application form
The student and faculty mentor fill out the application form, available on the final page of
this document.
2. one-page resume
3. proposal research topic
The student applicant and faculty mentor jointly prepare a two-page proposal describing
how the student plans to pursue coursework, a project, and a career in microwaves and RF.
The proposal should also describe how the funds would be used and which MTT-S sponsored
conference the student plans to attend.
4. official academic transcript
Current official transcript showing list of courses taken and grades.
Include a brief description of the grading system including the maximum possible grade (if
not a standard 4.0 scale).
5. letter of recommendation
The faculty mentor must submit a letter of recommendation commenting on the applicant’s
academic merit, ability to carry out the proposed project, and potential for a productive
career in RF/microwaves. The faculty mentor should also state that the student is not
graduating yet in the semester of award application.
The applicant should prepare one pdf file, grouping the requested documents 1-4, and submit it
using the online submission webpage:
http://www.mtt-tpms2.org/symposia_v6/MTTEDU/start.html
In addition, it is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the supervisor’s letter of
recommendation reaches the Chair by the deadline. This letter has to be sent by the
supervisor him/herself to the e-mail address zlatica.marinkovic@ieee.org.
If any item(s) is missing the application will not be considered for the award.
Application Deadline: April 15 for Fall Awards; October 15 for
Spring Awards
Winner responsibilities
1. The winner submits the research plan title and abstract, the university affiliation, the
advisor's name and title, the anticipated date of graduation, the LinkedIn link, and a
headshot that we use for the IEEE Microwave Magazine article and the MTT-S Education
webpage.
2. At the end of the 12 month cycle, the winner prepares a two-page report summarizing the
outcomes of the project (including referencing any publications that may have resulted in
part from the scholarship project work, an impression about having attended an MTT-S
sponsored conference/symposium), and indicating his/her next career plans (e.g., graduate
school? Continue for Ph.D.? Industry?). Please also let us know what impact if any the MTTS Scholarship program has had on your choices. This report will replace the research plan
abstract on the MTT-S Education Webpage.
3. The winner undertakes to keep updated the information about his/her further education or
employment on their LinkedIn link, to enable tracking of the career path of the scholarship
recipients.
