Multisensory Letter Introductions
Multisensory Letter Introductions teach the letters and letter clusters
(graphemes) that stand for speech sounds in English words. They are
taught, one at a time, through a series of steps called “linkages.” The steps
associate the reading (decoding) of the printed symbols with the spelling
(encoding) of the sound with the cursive letter shapes used for writing. The
following graphemes are taught in Kit 2:

g = (g) in initial, medial, or final position
Digraph ng = (ng) in final position, occasionally in medial
position
o = (o) in initial or medial position in a closed syllable
k = (k) in initial, medial, or final position
n = (ng) in medial position before the sounds of (k) and (g)
c = (k) in initial and medial position before a, o, u, or any
consonant, and in final position
Digraph ck = (k), usually in final position in one-syllable
Base words immediately after a short vowel
m = (m) in initial, medial, or final position
r = (r) in initial, medial, or final position
Digraph oo = (oo) in initial, medial position
b = (b) in initial, medial, or final position
Digraph th = (th) voiced in initial or medial position
Digraph th = (th) unvoiced in initial, medial, or final position
e = (e) in initial or medial position in a closed syllable
y = (y) in initial position, occasionally in medial position
j = (j) in initial or medial position
u = (u) in initial or medial position in a closed syllable
Reading and Spelling Concepts
This list will acquaint you with the concepts taught in Kit 2. Some of the
concepts are related to reading, and some are related to spelling. The
concepts provide additional information that enables students to read and
spell with the Multisensory Letter Introductions. Most concepts have one or
more Concept Review Cards, which are used for subsequent regular review.
