STYRIAN CHAMBERMUSIC FESTIVAL 2012
WEALTH
14th of July – 2nd of September 2012
www.kammermusik.co.at
PREFACE – Erich Oskar Huetter (artistic director)
Wealth - a term circulating in all social classes, evoking different associations and emotions right
now. But: how happy are the so-called rich and how rich are the happy actually? Will taking or giving
make us richer?
By no means we want to confine ourselves to scrutinizing material values in this festival. To me it is
an important concern to throw light on the cultural and social variety with all its included treasures.
The South African Orchestra MIAGI, led by Christian Muthspiel, as well as the concert at the
Kasematten alluding to the construction of the mosque in Graz will play an essential role this
summer. With Erwin Steinhauer and the actress Katharina Stemberger two well-known new guests
will enrich the festival with their lyrics and songs.
We will venture on a particular experiment by establishing a "concert hall" at the Grazer Mariahilfer
Square, inviting street musicians as well as festival artists to perform there.
There is no better place to pose the question of the meaning of happiness and wealth.
I wish you an entertaining and enriching festival summer 2012 that should give you food for thought!
Yours,
Erich Oskar Huetter

MOZART – MUSIC AND LETTERS
This ‘reading concert’ is about Mozart's journey to Mannheim and Paris in the year 1777 and about
the resulting piano works and letters. In contrast to the many journeys of his childhood this time
Mozart had to go without his father Leopold. He was worried about the welfare of his son, so that a
very eloquent correspondence occurred and almost daily messages were sent back and forth. This
correspondence shows in a very impressive way the Baroque person Mozart who reports sensitively
and tough at the same time about the perils of the journey. A fascinating kaleidoscope of emotions!
