Jones Rhines Hall Dept.: Materials Science and Engineering Room(s): 270 This SOP must be kept on file for lab staff training and review. It will be reviewed annually for accuracy. Date: Review date(s): 09/11/2007 09/11/2007 Revision date(s): 09/11/2007 By: The individual responsible for the Chemical Hygiene Plan in this area is: Dr. Jacob L. Jones Chemicals are stored in: Appropriately labeled containers stored in appropriately labeled cabinets in laboratory Chemicals are safely transported by the following means: Chemicals in form of powders would be placed in crucible or an appropriate container and then transported to the oven. Liquid chemical containing materials would be placed in appropriate containers and transported to the oven. All chemicals would be handled while wearing gloves. While taking out crucibles and containers make sure the inside temperature is below 100°C and use thermally insulating gloves. In the event of an accident or other emergency, the following shall be done: Eyes: Flush with water in eyewash station for 15 minutes Skin: Wash with soap and water, remove contaminated clothing Ingestion: Obtain immediate medical attention Obtain medical attention as necessary This is a list of our emergency equipment: First aid kit is beside the fume hood. Fire extinguisher is situated near the door and in the corridor. Eye wash station and emergency shower is present in hallway to the left of the door of the lab. In case of fire hazards, use the fire extinguisher in the lab and inform appropriate personnel. In case of electrical emergencies, immediately shut off the oen. The following are the spill control and decontamination procedures: Mix with an appropriate absorbent material, place in an appropriate container and dispose through EH&S. For large spills, contact EH&S hazardous materials management at 392-8400 The following are the waste disposal procedures: Hazardous wastes are stored in appropriately labeled containers. EH&S Hazards Materials Management will pick up all waste from this laboratory. 1. 5. Standard Operating Procedure for the activity: 2. Chemical(s) Used 3. Hazard Class 4.
