Rev Charles Bunworth: For many years Protestant Rector of Buttevant, County Cork,
the Rev Charles Bunworth was greatly distinguished by his knowledge and
remarkably good performance of the Irish Harp, and at the time of his death, about
1770, he had in his possession fifteen harps, which were bequeathed to him at various
times by the minstrels of his native land as a lasting token of their gratitude for his
hospitality towards them. His own harp was made by the famous Kelly, and bore on
its front the inscription “made by John Kelly for the Reverend Charles Bunworth,
Ball-Daniel 1734”. The Rev Charles Bunworth was great grandfather of Crofton
Croker, author of “Irish Fairy Legends” into whose hands this harp passed, and was
sold with his effects in London in 1854.
In the “Croker Sale Catalogue” an illustration is given of this Irish Harp – a facsimile
of that which appears in Volume second of ……. S. C. Hallis “Ireland from a drawing
by Maclise”. In the said catalogue it is stated that “At the constitutions of meetings of
the Bards of Ireland between the years 1700 and 1750which was generally held every
three years at Brunee (?), County Limerick, the Rev Charles Bunworth was five times
chosen as umpire or president. Mr Bunworth had also an intimate knowledge of the
Classics, and whom the afterwards celebrated John Philpot Curran came to him to be
examined before he entered Trinity College, Dublin, he was so much pleased with
Curran answering that he gave him pecuniary assistance”.

Rev Charles Bunworth Harps: In a note on the Rev Charles Bunworth in a recent
number of this journal it was stated that several harps had been from time to time
bequeathed to him by …………………. – representatives of that long extinct class –
the Irish harpers. What became of those harps is told in the following extract from a
notice of Mr Bunworth (in which is related the story of the banshee that heralded his
death) given in the edition of “the Fairy Legends” by Croker, published by Tegg,
Horden about 1862. See page 146 “The Banshee”.

Rev Charles Bunworth Harps: One of these harps was catalogued in the sale by
Puttick and Simpson of Thomas Crofton Croker collection which were sold at their
auction rooms on Thursday December 21st 1854 and two following days and was this
described: Lot 336 – An Irish Harp, on e of the few specimens that remain of a orca
calibrated instrument; noticed in Mr and Mrs S C Hallis “Ireland Vol II page 140,
with a woodcut from a drawing by Maclise. At the constitutions of meetings of the
Bards of Ireland, between the years 1730 and 1750, which was generally held every
three years at Brunee (?), County Limerick, the Rev Charles Bunworth was five times
chosen as umpire or president. The harp now under notice bears the inscription on the
front - “made by John Kelly for the Reverend Charles Bunworth, Ball-Daniel 1734”.
