Mystery Gifts under Chester Cathedral Tree
Staff at Chester Cathedral are offering the chance to buy someone a Christmas gift
with a touch of mystery.
Admissions and box office staff are selling gift vouchers for next year’s production of
Chester Mystery Plays, which will be presented at the cathedral in June and July
2013.
The gift vouchers are available in multiples of £5 and can be redeemed for tickets for
any performance from June 26 – July 13 2013. Ticket prices range from £12 to £25.
The voucher idea was the brainchild of volunteer Sue Benson.
Chairman of the Chester Mystery Plays Jo Sykes said: “We have a huge team of
volunteers helping out with all aspects of the plays, from backstage to box office,
and it is great to be able to put such a good idea into practice.
“The gift vouchers will make an excellent Christmas present as the recipient can be
assured of a truly unforgettable theatrical experience next summer.”
The production, directed by Peter Leslie Wild, will be performed by a large
community cast in the nave of Chester Cathedral for the first time in the history of
the medieval plays.
The vouchers are available from Chester Cathedral box office in person, by
telephoning 01244 500959 or online from www.chestermysteryplays.com.

Notes to editors:
The Chester Mystery Plays run from June 26 to July 13 2013. Tickets are already on
sale from 01244 500959 or via www.chestermysteryplays.com
The Chester Mystery Plays were first written in the 14th century by Benedictine
monks of the Abbey of St Werbugh (now Chester Cathedral). The 25 Chester plays
form the most complete cycle in full performance in existence. They were produced
regularly by local guilds until the late 16th century. They were revived in Chester in
1951 to celebrate the Festival of Britain and have been produced at least every five
years since.
