TCE 219 Civil Rights and Multicultural Issues in Education (3 cr)
Examination of the context of working with students, schools, communities, and workplaces;
the diversity of learning cultures (e.g. urban, suburban, rural) and the diversity among
learners within those different cultures; and the influence of culture on one's learning. or
TCE 522 Racial and Cultural Harmony in the K-12 Classroom (3 cr)
An examination of individual and cultural values, perceptions and assumptions regarding the
foreign-born, refugees, American minorities, and undocumented persons existing within
society and schools; development of communication skills for negotiating at the individual,
group, and institutional and cross-cultural level.

TCE 572 Theoretical Foundations of Language Acquisition for P-12 Educators (3 cr)
Explores the topics of the nature of languages, first and additional language acquisition and
assessment, theoretical principles and rationale for English language learning, teaching, and
assessing in diverse K-12 contexts. Examines key issues in language acquisition and
assessment, surveys major theoretical perspectives, and considers implications for classroom

TCE 573 Instructional Approaches for P-12 English Language Learners (3 cr)
An analysis of current approaches and materials in working with English Language Learners.
Class discussions, presentations, and activities examine and develop units of study,
curriculum materials, and assessment strategies for teaching and assessing conversation,
composition, literature, and culture of the first and additional languages, and for teaching

TCE 576 Language Policy and Issues in Bilingual Education (3 cr)
This course presents issues related to local, state, and federal laws and policies pertaining to
educating P-12 English Language Learners. Class readings and discussions will include
evaluating the historical, political, social/cultural, and linguistic issues involved in bilingual
education programs designed to meet the needs of students who are speakers of languages

TCE 599 Linguistics for ELL/Bilingual Teachers (3 cr)
This course explores the relationship between first and second language acquisition, English
phonology, orthography, phonics, morphology, and syntax in addition to teaching
implications for the instruction of first and second languages in K-12 contexts. The course
provides basic aspects of language study, particularly for ESOL and bilingual teachers, not
only from a psycholinguistic perspective but also from a sociolinguistic perspective that
focuses on how language choices are shaped by particular purposes, communicative intents,
native and new cultures, and immediate contexts. TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATED

TCE 510 ESOL Internship (3 cr)
A total of 90 contact hours working with an ESOL endorsed teacher/specialist in the
appropriate grade level; focus on ELP standards; teach/write work sample. (Prerequisites:
TCE 573 and TCE 599)

TCE 510 ESOL/Bilingual Internship (3 cr)
A total of 90 contact hours working with ESOL/Bilingual endorsed teacher/specialist in a
bilingual (Spanish/English) or two-way immersion classroom in the appropriate grade level;
instruction in non-English language (Spanish); focus on ELP standards; teach/write work
sample written in Spanish language. (Prerequisites: TCE 573 and TCE 599)
