Good morning! Welcome to the 1st half of Intermediate Algebra. At SCC, the prerequisite course is Math 100.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLO's) for this course = Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
simplify expressions and solve equations involving absolute values, polynomials, rational expressions, and radicals;
solve linear and absolute value inequalities. demonstrate an understanding of the definition of a function, use function
notation, and perform the four arithmetic operations on functions; sketch the graphs of basic functions and transformations
of the functions; and apply algebraic methods when solving word problems.
Each day, be sure to bring the textbook (“Intermediate Algebra”, 3rd ed. by Sullivan + Struve)
and a good calculator. The TI-83/84 graphing calculator is highly recommended. Writing with a pencil
is preferred, but using a pen is also OK. Large desks are only first-come-first-used, unless a student has
authorization from DSPS with a matching desk #. Students with a verifiable disability may be entitled to
appropriate academic accommodations. Please contact me before the 1st exam.
Each student is responsible for knowing which homework problems are assigned in lecture.
Credit on any type of work requires your work to be shown on all problems. No credit will be given for HW
which is turned in after the exam day corresponding to the chapters the exam covers. Academic plagiarism
is forbidden (taking the work or ideas of another person & passing them off as your own). Students must move
their seats if Mr. Harbison is suspicious of cheating during an exam.
There will be 4 quizzes, 4 tests & 1 cumulative final exam. Exams are at the end of class time unless other
no make-up exams
arrangements are made ahead of time. Since
will be allowed,
then one quiz and one test will be forgiven (dropped). ‘Extra Credit’ (if given at all) will count only towards
the “Homework” score, and only up to 2% of the grade. The course grade will be based on the following
(90% for an A, 80% for a B, 70% for a C, 60% for a D):
Homework:
Quizzes (best 3 of 4):
Tests (best 3 of 4):
Cumulative Final Exam (Tue. Dec. 15, 10:15 am - 12:15 pm):
5%
27%
48%
20%
100%
Attendance is essential. A student with two or more unexcused absences may be dropped. If you miss class
due to an emergency, then contact me to make the absence excused. Arriving late or leaving early by more than
10 minutes will count as an absence. A student who has been dropped will not be “re-added” for any reason.
Mr. H. may opt to assign an incomplete grade (I) only because of an unforeseeable emergency within
the last few weeks of a semester for a student who had a passing grade before the emergency (i.e. major illness
or a death in the family).

This class requires at least 10 hours/week outside of class for homework. Do you have that much time
in your schedule? This stuff goes by very quickly. Take advantage of the resources available to you.
(For example, SCC counselors @ 558-2204 can find food & shelter for students.) Good luck!
(Except for Nov. 26, this class will meet every TuTh until Dec. 15 — even if no HW is due.)
