Thank you for your interest in and enthusiasm at today's workshop! We had an incredible showing of diverse and complementary knowledge and skills-- exactly what we were hoping for!-- and believe there is fantastic opportunity and foundation here for collaborative research projects at Redlair. I've attempted to summarize below everyone's areas of interest and/or expertise using a few keywords to help stimulate your memory of what they talked about. Following that is a summary of what we managed to accomplish today, who agreed to do what, etc. Please take a few minutes to read through it, and submit to the group ("Reply All") any corrections or additions you see fit! Thanks again. It was a wonderful day! Carrie Participants in 8/15/08 workshop for research collaborations at Redlair Sabine Rankin-- host/guide/partial owner of Redlair Sharon Wilson-- Catawba Land Conservancy-- stewardship director; wonderful resource person! Missy Eppes-- UNC Charlotte-- soil geomorphology and development; anthocyanins in maples differ along hillslope Anne Jefferson-- UNC Charlotte-- hydrology; groundwater, headwaters, intermittent streams, hyporrheic zone Tony Layzell-- UNCC-- Anne Jefferson's grad student; presumably similar interests Melissa Pilgrim-- USC Upstate & Savanna River Ecol. Lab-- reptile & amphibian expert! Jack Turner-- USC Upstate-- aquatic fecal coliforms; education & outreach Bob Peet-- UNC Chapel Hill & Duke Forest-- Carolina Vegetation Survey, riparian vegetation of the Piedmont Jason Price-- the PA guy from Millersville-- geology; Ca-silicate weathering; hydrology, water chem, ppt Greg Pillar-- Queens-- geochemist; soil development & land use Jessica Braswell-- Queens-- ecologist-- invasive spp, effects on food web and control Reed Perkins-- Queens-- hydrology; groundwater, headwaters, intermittent streams, hyporrheic zone; science education Carrie DeJaco-- Queens-- ecologist; plant communities; deer exclosures; plant-animal interactions Scott Werts-- Winthrop-- geobiologist; soil development & associated microbes, decomposition Peter Phillips-- Winthrop & Catawba Riverkeepers-- nutrients in surface waters Joe Fail-- Johnson C. Smith-- ecology, hydrology; has water N data from wells on site; plans for deer exclosures Mike McLeod-- Belmont Abbey College-- ecological genetics; genetic structure of populations Lisa Gaffney-- Habitat Assessment & Restoration Program-- botany; specific interest in Redlair as Recovery Site nfor endangered Schweinitz's sunflower Jim Matthews-- Habitat Assessment & Restoration Program-- field botany, ecology, endangered spp Jim Burke-- Nat. Resource Commission of Gaston County Charlie Williams-- scholar of Micheaux's travels & discoveries Accomplishments & Plans Bob Peet will establish a listserv which will ease our group communications (redlair@listserv.unc.edu) All communications regarding our planning of work at Redlair will ideally be sent to all to encourage participation and collaboration by announcing visits, collection dates, etc. so that others may join in. All reliable data will be submitted to Sharon Wilson (ideally in an Excel spreadsheet), along with a brief summary/abstract of what the data entail (ideally in a Word document). An advisory committee will be assembled to keep track of what projects are going on where and when. This committee will be presented with any new research ideas for discussion of methodology, potential impact of the project to Redlair, specific sampling locations, etc. Members of this committee will be the Rankins, Sharon Wilson, Carrie DeJaco, and either Missy Eppes or Anne Jefferson. Sharon will work with the CLC's GIS/mapping guru to create a grid with UTM coordinates to be used to specify locations of sampling sites. GPS points should also be used whenever possible when sampling. Missy Eppes will send out an e-mail to everyone with today's distributed materials to ensure everyone has copies of it all. Lisa Gaffney and Carrie DeJaco will discuss plans for a fall mini-bio-blitz. Melissa Pilgram will work on setting up a herp bio blitz in May. We want to recruit an interested entomologist. Suggested people to contact are Duane Flynn, Steve Hall, Doug Rayner, and Ed Menhinick. It would also be nice to recruit someone to mistnet bats. Sub-groups should be formed among people with similar interests/goals for discussion of specific projects and delegation of collection of common needed data.
