Keynotes about projects and programmes Opening Presentation of current and planned FP6 research projects (Lipiatou) Presentation of CarboEurope-IP Presentation of NitroEurope Presentation of CarboOcean 5 min 20 min 20 min 15 min 15 min 2. Regional terrestrial carbon balance estimates (Heimann) This session will present regional to continental scale terrestrial greenhouse gas balances derived by top-down as well as bottom-up approaches. 3. Ocean basin C cycling (Heinze) Carbon cycling within oceans as well as the exchange of carbon between the oceans and the atmosphere will be main topics of this session. The focus will be on the North Atlantic. 4. Climate feedbacks on the carbon and nitrogen cycle (Ciais) This session will include climate scenarios and their feedback to the carbon and nitrogen cycles on land and in oceans. 5. Regional hotspots of vulnerability of the biosphere carbon cycle (Dolman) “Hot spots” are regions where climate and human impact could cause large positive feedbacks of the biosphere to climate change (e.g. permafrost areas, wetlands, boreal and tropical forests, Mediterranean ecosystems and ecosystems sensitive to drought and atmospheric pollution). Siberia and Africa may be regions discussed concerning their vulnerability to climate change and possible feedback mechanisms in this session. 6. Regional nitrogen and other greenhouse gas fluxes (Sutton) This session will deal with the interactions between carbon and nitrogen in terrestrial ecosystems. Topics include the nitrogen constraints on carbon cycling as well as the formation of N2O und NO. 7. Partitioning of ecosystem C fluxes (Janssens) The partitioning of ecosystem carbon fluxes into assimilation, autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration and losses due to disturbances will be discussed in this session. Topics will also include the formation and loss of CH4 and VOC and the leaching of DIC / DOC. 8. Carbon and nitrogen turnover in soils (Schulze) Soil processes play an important role in the carbon cycle of terrestrial ecosystems. This session will deal with the turnover of carbon in soils and the different ways of carbon stabilisation and will discuss heterotrophic respiration. The sensitivity of carbon decomposition to climate and land use will be a main topic. 9. Human impacts on regional carbon cycling (Levin) Humans have large impacts on carbon cycling both by land use and management and due to the emission of CO2 via the consumption of fossil fuels. This session will include the discussion of fossil fuel inventories in urban and suburban areas as well as the influence of human land management on the interannual variability of regional C-fluxes 10. Greenhouse gas research in relation to policy (Valentini) This session will discuss issues relating to climate policy beyond 2012 such as avoiding deforestation,, land carbon management, trade-offs between C sequestration and C use in products etc. Style of the conference Pre-conference accession to CarboEurope parallel meetings for interested scientists. The conference will take place similar to the CO2 conference as pure plenary conference. oral sessions with invited keynote lecture (review) and scientific presentations chosen out of an open call for abstracts poster sessions exhibits of instrumentation post-conference excursion Draft schedule: 15 Mar 06 Announcement and call for papers 1 June 06 Deadline for abstracts 1 July 06 Decision about oral/poster programme 1 Sep 06 Deadline for submitting paper for conference proceedings Deadline for registration 13-17 Nov 06 CarboEurope-IP meeting and Conference To be announced: Nature or Science, AGU, GCP, NEU kick-off, EGU, IGBP Beijing
