JUNIOR LEADER PROGRAM
New York State Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America
PROGRAM PURPOSE
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America encourages development of student leaders
through involvement. Leadership training is a key factor throughout the organization. The
middle/junior level student learns from observation what leadership roles they may pursue. In
order to better prepare these students, participation and training should begin at this level. The
Junior Leader Program is intended to increase the involvement of middle/junior high age
students in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America at the local, district and state
level.
ELIGIBILITY
1. The student must be/have been registered in a Middle School or Junior High program
2. The student must be an affiliated member of FCCLA
3. The student must have at least one year experience as a member of FCCLA before assuming
Junior Leader responsibilities at Summer Leadership
4. The student must meet local school district requirements for participation in extracurricular
activities.
5. The student shall be elected by the District. The name and address of the Junior Leader shall
be submitted to the FCCLA Coordinator by May 15.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. The Junior Leader will act as an Ambassador for the organization.
2. The Junior Leader will attend all District Meetings and State Conference.
3. The Junior Leader is expected to pay for attendance at Summer Leadership, Fall Planning
and State Conference. The Junior Leader will attend an additional night prior to State
Conference.
4. Student will assume Junior Leader responsibilities beginning with Summer Leadership. It is
strongly suggested the Junior Leader-Elect attend the State Conference prior to assuming
office.
5. During his/her term of office, the Junior Leaders will:

Host/Hostess State Conference Workshops and Sessions as needed

Learn the Creed

Complete Step One

Assist with registration procedure

Guide arriving delegates

Take part in STAR Events

Shadow State Officers
6. Junior Leaders will wear a uniform chosen by the group.
BENEFITS
A certificate of completion will be presented to the Junior Leaders at the State Leadership
Conference Recognition Ceremony. During their tenure as Junior Leader, the student will have
the opportunity to shadow older student officers, take on additional responsibilities, and develop
additional leadership skills.
ADVISOR
The Junior Leader Program will be advised by an experienced FCCLA volunteer.
Junior Leader Advisor Guidelines and Expectations

Help Jr. Leader fill out application and prepare speech for district election

Mail application after election to Karen Thomas

Attend Summer Leadership, Fall Planning, and State Meeting

Collect shirt money from Jr. Leader and sent to trainer after Summer Leadership

Provide clearly written contact information to trainers

Be present in the Jr. Leader training room to observe the member and have a general
knowledge of what is happening

Check that your student has cash to cover meals that are on your own during Fall
Planning and State Conference

Make sure your Jr. Leader is observing the curfew and bed time

Encourage JL to eat healthy and drinking water through the weekend ( contribute healthy
snacks to meetings)

Check in with Jr. Leader in between meetings for responsibilities

During downtime, check in with trainers and Karen if tasks are needed

If events happen in your JL life, report/communicate with the trainer

Contribute to trainer wish-list of supplies

Advise and supervise STAR Event project

Oversee JL uniform and packing list

Have JL be recognized at BOE meeting (speak if possible)
