Add a bird bath to Your Lawn or

Garden

By installing a simple bird bath, your yard will be more attractive to wildlife and you can enjoy watching the birds playing and splashing in the cool pool of water.

Your new bird bath doesn't have to be expensive. It can be as simple as a shallow pan filled with water placed on your lawn. Or if you want to go all out, you can purchase an exquisite concrete bird bath complete with fountain. Or you can choose something in between.

What you need to know before you buy or make a birdbath:

Birds prefer shallow water (no more than 1-2 inches). If the water is deeper they will avoid it. If your bird bath is deeper, put some gravel or a rock in the bath.

It is best to have a dish with a very gradual incline, deeper in the middle.

The bottom of the bird bath should have a fairly rough surface giving the birds a solid footing.

Where to place your birdbath:

Bird baths may be placed on the ground, on a raised pedestal or hung from a branch a few feet off the ground.

Predators such as cats like to hide in shrubs and foliage waiting for an opportunity to catch a bathing bird. Birds need a clear view of the surrounding area and like to be able to flee to a nearby tree or shrub if they spot danger. Plant only low growing plants near your bird feeder.

Most birds do not like full sun or full shade.

Have a supply of food nearby, either plants with berries or seeds or a bird feeding station to attract the birds to their birdbath.

Keep the bird bath clean. Dirt and waste can make birds sick. Dump the water out and refill it every couple of days.

Be patient! It takes a while for the birds to become accustomed to the bath. They won't use it for at least a couple of weeks, until they know it isn't going to get them.

CLAY POT BIRDBATH

A clay pot birdbath is simple to make and the birds just love them.

Supplies You Need For This Birdbath

Option 1 (Tall):

16" and 14" clay pots

16" clay saucer

Option 2 (Short):

14” clay pot

16” clay saucer

Liquid nails, silicone adhesive or heavy duty outdoor glue

How To Make Your Clay Pot Birdbath

If you are going to paint your pots do so before you glue them together. For the taller pot, glue the two bottoms of the pots together with the 16” pot on the bottom and the 14” pot on the top. Center the saucer and glue it to the top pot.

You are done.

For the shorter pot, center the saucer to the top of the pot and glue them together. You are done.

Other Simple Bird Baths

A variety of containers are suitable for use as a bird bath:

Garbage Can Lids: Set the lid in a shallow depression to prevent overturning, then partially fill with small rocks and stones and add water.

Logs: Chisel out a shallow area on top of the log, then sand smooth, and add water. This is a very natural looking bird bath feature to add to any landscape.

Pie Plate: To make a hanging bird bath, set a ceramic, deep-dish pie plate on top of a hanging basket.
