1 Nintendo Theme Packet Questions by Mike Bentley mike000@umd.edu Attention Quizbowl Degenerates: All of these questions deal with subjects relating to Nintendo. Note that they don’t all have to be Nintendo produced-games, they can also talk about games that appeared on Nintendo systems. These questions were written for the 100th episode party for the GoNintendo podcast (http://www.gonintendo.com), so they were written for an audience with a pretty strong knowledge of Nintendo. I also wanted to vary the format a bit, so I tried my hand at making a Questions Unlimited style packet that didn’t suck. -Mike Round 1: Tossups Here are 15 tossups. There are no bonuses in this round. 1) This character once dropped two of his three Music Keys and lost the other when he was beaten in Truffle Tower. His second appearance saw him taking the Mischief Star Stamp and forcing the other characters to come to his namesake island to challenge him and win it back via a board game. As an unlockable character, he was associated with the Gold Mantis kart in Mario Kart: DS, and was also the namesake of a pinball stage in that game. First appearing in the N64 version of Mario Tennis and later showing up in other Mario sports and party games, FTP, name this evil sidekick of Wario. ANSWER: Waluigi 2) Argonaut Games developed both it and the first game released using it, and canceled games set to use it included Elite and Comanche. Because cartridges with it contained extra contacts, certain Game Genies were not compatible with those games. Its second incarnation expanded the clock speed of its RISC processor to 21 megahertz and games that made use of that second version included Doom and Yoshi’s Island. FTP, identify this chip that powered 3D SNES titles like Stunt Racer and Star Fox. ANSWER: Super FX Chip 3) You battle him in the obscenely difficult Rivals bonus mission, and he is first encountered when he mistakes you for an evil clone. His lesser power in the first American sequel in which he appears gives his air units additional firepower, although in each game his navy has been weak. Known for his strong air force and ability to move every unit but infantry units twice per turn, FTP, which Green Earth CO “soars above you” with his deadly Lightening Strike CO Power in the Advance Wars series? ANSWER: Eagle 4) An expansion pack to this game imprisoned the title character in a dream world and involved a lot of "tinkling" of hearts on children. Due to a deal between Nintendo and Atlus, Cubivore was localized for North America instead of this game. The title character's size changes based on the feelings of the villagers of Barudo Island, and that character was named the Love Giant in a Smash Brothers trophy. Released in Japan and Europe but not the United States, FTP, identify this game about a god-like yellow creature originally bundled with the ill fated 64DD. ANSWER: Doshin The Giant 5) One of the tracks in this game, Diamond City, contained a cameo featuring E. Gadd, and the planned sequel to this game will include Mametchi, the main character in the Tamagotchi series. The original featured items like the Thunder Stick which could be used for close-combat, and the Blooper-like Cream Pie item. A camera is used to take pictures of racers’ faces in this game, a game that also features Namco characters like Blinky and Pac Man. Released on the Triforce arcade board along with F-Zero AX, FTP, identify this arcade version of a popular Nintendo racing series. 2 ANSWER: Mario Kart Arcade GP 6) This Clio award winner and Cornell alumnus had stints with Proctor & Gamble and Pizza Hut early in his career, being the man responsible for the introduction of the Bigfoot Pizza. He replaced Tatsumi Kimishima in his current position, which he attained after a successful stint as Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Like Shiggy, he has appeared on shirts in the style of Che Guevara. FTP, identify this current president of Nintendo of America who is about kickin’ ass and takin’ names. ANSWER: Reginald “Reggie” Fils-Aime (accept either answer) 7) In Wave Race 64, it earns you at least 1400 points and can be performed in two directions by inverting the way the control stick is moved. In another game, both the Blue Marine and the Landmaster are able to do it. The character who instructs you as to how to perform this maneuver also says things like "You're becoming more like your father" and "it's quiet... too quiet", and it can most famously be done in an Arwing. FTP, Peppy tells you to press Z or R twice to do this maneuver from Starfox 64, now a popular Internet meme. ANSWER: Barrel Roll 8) His deceased wife appears as a ghost in a GBA game controlled mainly with the L and R buttons, and in a remake he owns a racing ostrich named Expresso II. He operates a dojo in one game, while in an earlier game this husband of Wrinkly serves as the curator of a museum on Crocodile Island. He awards players a copy of Jetpac when they give him fifteen Banana Medals in the N64 game in which he appears in. FTP, name this cantankerous, cane carrying former Paulicapturer in the Donkey Kong Country series. ANSWER: Cranky Kong 9) The side of it that was most often used contained twelve buttons, with Player 1's being blue and Player 2's being red. Super Team Games made use of its otherwise rarely used reverse side containing only eight buttons, and the game most associated with this accessory contained characters named Horse and Cheetah and had events like the Triple Jump and the 100 Meter Dash. Coming withNES's that also included World Class Track Meet, FTP, name this accessory that players laid out on the floor to use their feet to run. ANSWER: Power Pad (also accept Family Fun Fitness and Family Trainer) 10) His hair color was changed to blond in the Super Nintendo game in which he appeared, and his only 3D appearance came in an EA published game released in 2005 subtitled Round 2. He can often be heard saying things like “I can’t win” and “he has hurt me” to Doc Louis, whose magical healing powers can be summoned once per battle by pressing select, and in the original he can be seen jogging past the Statue of Liberty during cut scenes. Pitted against foes like Don Flamenco, Great Tiger, Bald Bull and, most notably, Mike Tyson, FTP, identify this protagonist of the Punch-Out series. ANSWER: Little Mac 11) The TurboGrafx had one, and Sega's one for the Genesis permitted blood in games like Techno Cop but did not allow for profanity or nudity. In Europe the most famous one is circular rather than elliptical and also contains the word "original" on it. From 1985 to 1988 the most famous North American one had a black background which was later changed to white with gold spikes and gold text. Created by Nintendo as a response to the videogame crash of 1983, FTP, identify this stamp of approval placed on all officially licensed early games on Nintendo systems. ANSWER: Nintendo Seal of Quality 12) In one game, it has been confiscated by a Skeleton Knight who must be defeated three times before you can attain it. In another game, it is necessary to employ it to get through the village in Ikana Canyon and can be found in the Pirate's Fortress. It was used to defeat Arrghus to get the second crystal in the Swamp Palace in the game in which it could first be acquired. First appearing in A Link To The Past, FTP, identify this relative of the Clawshot that allows Link to grab faraway objects. ANSWER: The Hookshot 3 13) This game was packed into copies of R: Racing Revolution and I-Ninja. Enemies controlled by the computer in this game only function when touched by human players, a process which turns them from gray to being colored. Enemies can increase their sight range by consuming fruit, and if they capture the main character the two players are instructed to switch controllers. Partially designed by Miyamoto, FTP, identify this competitive update of a classic arcade game where three players command ghosts on a television screen while one player moves the title yellow character around on the GBA. ANSWER: Pacman Vs. 14) Jimmy Zoppi has provided his voice since the first episode he appeared in, and in the 15th "Chronicles" episode he is researching fossils and leaves his discovery in the care of Crystal. His older sister is known as either May or Daisy, and in certain games that sister provides free grooming from 3-4 PM and also gives you a town map. His only confirmed losses in the anime come at the hands of Giovanni, at the Silver Conference, and to a trainer at Indigo Plateau. Currently possessing an Umbreon, Electivire and Dodrio, FTP, name this rival of Ash in Pokémon Red and Blue. ANSWER: Gary Oak (also accept Blue) 15) Daigasso! Band Brothers contained the music from this game as the 6th part of its Famicom Medley, and it was programmed as a "warm up" by Kazuaki Morita before he went on to be the chief programmer for Super Mario Bros. Enemies in this game include Nitpickers and Topis, the latter of which were seals in the Japanese version. The bonus stages in this game gave the two players a chance to take back their fruit from the condor that they had been chasing. Also including eggplant and yetis, FTP, identify this early NES game starring Popo and Nana of Smash Bros. Melee fame. ANSWER: Ice Climber Round 2: Tossup / Bonus Round Standard tossup / bonus Quizbowl fare. The idea is to end when all of the 7 bonuses have been read, or if you run out of tossups. 1) The vehicles in this series were changed to motorcycles in the Hyper Bike game released for the N64. The SNES sequel slowed the speed down and added a damage bar, while the original contained only four cars, the Weasel, Razor, Sidewinder and Cannibal. The soundtrack for the original game was redone in heavy metal style by MegaDriver, songs that were originally remixes of tracks from the Lotus series. Remade into the "Rally" series on the GBA, FTP, name this early racing game by Kecmo whose title indicates the highest position of a car with manual transmission. ANSWER: Top Gear 2) In StarTropics, Hook asks you if you are this character. He made a cameo as a lost NPC in Dragon Warrior, and in his first appearance gave out tips on The Legend of Zelda. He starred in a "Funky Bowling" game for the Virtual Boy and was also named Lark in Pilotwings. The namesake of a popular NES emulator and a series of early videogame awards, FTP, identify this character who appeared alongside Nintendo Fan Club president Howard Phillips in a comic strip in early issues of Nintendo Power. ANSWER: Nester 3) To beat the silver medal challenge in the firing range mode for this weapon it is necessary to hit targets facing away from you. This weapon can hold four clips of 50 SMG rounds each and has a 2X zoom ability, and some good spots to use the secondary fire mode of this Carrington Institute weapon include the bridge over the courtyard in the Villa. FTP, identify this weapon from Perfect Dark whose secondary fire mode allows it to be set up as a sentry, a weapon meant to resemble a portable computer. ANSWER: Laptop Gun 4 4) This one year old is deactivated after he wins the tournament he was entered in, being put in a museum to be viewed by human slaves. His moves in the original game included Reflect and Cyberdash, and one of his Danger Moves turned his head into a turret that fires at the enemy. Canonically destroyed by Jago, he was rebuilt in the "Gold" sequel by Ultratech and retained his Eyelaser ability. FTP, identify this cyborg and underboss from the Killer Instinct series. ANSWER: Fulgore 5) The food division owned by this company sold instant rice and at one point it ran a taxi company. Their employee Gunpei Yamuchi came up with the popular Ultrahand toy capable of grabbing objects at a distance. More notably, they released a computerized version of Othello in 1978 and infamously produced the arcade flop, Radar Scope in 1980. FTP, identify this videogame company responsible for publishing arcade games like Sheriff, Arm Wrestling and Popeye and console games like Rad Racer, Mach Rider, Mother, and Super Mario Brothers. ANSWER: Nintendo 6) In a GBA game starring one of these creatures, the protagonist's family is kidnapped by the Tails Brigade. Ones known as Metaly are really hard to kill, while knights sometimes use these as a mount. In one game, their capital is Boingburg and they face an invasion from Plob, a mafia made up of platypuses. That DS game also starred Rocket, one of these creatures, and was released last year as part of the Heroes line. FTP, identify these blue Hershey's Kiss like enemies that have become the mascot of the Dragon Quest series. ANSWER: Slime 7) It used a 33 character long password to save player progress and at one point Atari tester Armen Casarjian obtained this game's expired trademark and was working on a sequel. Enemies in this game included the Internationals who are led by Ivan, and the Dragons, guys who love to throw rocks at you. Atlus's GBA remake of this game drew flak for not including the popular two player mode of the original, which gave players the ability to play as either Ryan or Alex. FTP, identify this NES beat 'em up where you battled The Generic Dudes and Frat Boys while rescuing Cyndi. ANSWER: River City Ransom 8) Each of this game's seven chapters start with the word "one", such as One Nasty Invasion where you have to keep Spydorz busy for 30 seconds. This game's upcoming DS sequel, Park Patrol, moves the setting outdoors and sees the title character watering flowers and driving vehicles. In the original, the main character is given to Jenny Sanderson as a birthday gift by her father and interacts with toys like Drake Redcrest. FTP, identify this Gamecube game starring a small, battery-powered robot doing chores around the house. ANSWER: Chibi-Robo 9) It was used to guide Wanda in the Japanese only Mario and Wario game, while King Arthur's World was one of the few third party games to use it. One was released for the N64 with intention of using it for certain 64DD games subtitled Game Maker and Video Jockey Maker. The game in which it came packed in with included example songs like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and the mini-game "Gnat Attack". Often used in SNES games ported from the PC like Civilization, Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, FTP, identify this two-buttoned accessory that came packed in with Mario Paint. ANSWER: SNES Mouse 10) Copies of this game's sequel with a red sash on the cover were distributed with a miniDVD in Wal-Mart stores and that sequel contained unlockable characters like Titanium Vasquez, Crystal Hayami and Mimi Le Moose. The original game's soundtrack, composed by Kenta Nagata, contained songs instructing you to "get down" and to "work your body", and courses included Deadly Falls, Dragon Cave and the Half Pipe. ANSWER: 1080° Snowboarding 5 11) In the arcade version of this game, the WIDB-TV studio can be seen at half time and you could also get behind another player and pull their pants down. Playable characters include Reggie, the All American, and Blade, the crowd pleaser. Obstacles that players face include trash thrown by the crowd and refs that stick their foot out to trip you. Featuring punching and backboard breaking slam dunks, FTP, identify this NES basketball game seen as a precursor to NBA Jam, developed by Rare. ANSWER: Arch Rivals 12) This level is unlocked when you earn either silver or gold in all of the levels in Jumble Hopper, and the fourth test here requires you to find a gas station to refuel. Going inside of a building lets you warp from one end of it to another, and the credits are set here during either sunny, evening, or starry night time frames depending on your scores. Test 3 in the Hanglider here requires you to take pictures of a space shuttle, while you can also find Mount Rushmore with Mario or Wario on it in this locale. FTP, identify this miniature replica of the United States, a level in Pilotwings 64. ANSWER: Little States 13) The new channel that it adds to the dashboard allows you to compare your stats against your friends and family. In one of the games, players must be careful to avoid shoes being thrown at them, while in another players attempt to guide a ball down a small hole. It is capable of measuring your center of gravity, and also calculates your body mass index, although it does not display your weight. Making use of the Wii Balance Board, FTP, identify this game announced by Miyamoto at Nintendo's E3 press conference this year. [10] The Japanese version of this sequel was essentially complete before it was canceled due to the impending release of the N64. It featured a return to the Lylat System and dog fights against Wolf O'Donnell and his team. ANSWER: Star Fox 2 [10] The Gamecube version of this Blizzard game was canceled due the system's lack of multiplayer. Later the PS2 and Xbox versions would be canceled, leaving main character Nova high and dry. ANSWER: Starcraft: Ghost [10] Slated to be released for the CD-i, this direct sequel to Super Mario World was ultimately canceled due to limitations of the CD-i and the system's failure in general. ANSWER: Super Mario's Wacky Worlds 3) Name the game from clues, on a 30-20-10 basis. These clues will all be on the same game, and will get progressively easier and worth less each time you unsuccessfully answer the question. [5, 5] Two answers required: Both available early on in Red and Blue, one eventually evolves into a 6 Butterfree while the other eventually evolves into a Beedrill. ANSWER: Caterpie and Weedle [10] Introduced in Diamond and Pearl, it stands upright, is red in color, and has the swarm ability. Appropriately, some of its extremities resemble the bows of a violin. ANSWER: Kricketune [10] Catchable only in the Safari Zone in Red and Blue, this brown bug Pokemon has two spiked horns and teeth perpendicular to its eyes. Ash defeats one with a Metapod in the anime. ANSWER: Pinsir 5) It seems like almost every year a new Harvest Moon game is released. Identify some of them. You'll get 5 points for one, 10 for two, 20 for three, or 30 for all four correct. [A] Mistakenly called "Harvest Moon Heroes", this upcoming Wii game unsurprisingly will map farming tasks to waggle. ANSWER: Harvest Moon: Tree of Peace [B] Pretty much Harvest Moon meets Animal Crossing, this Gamecube game introduced a rival who competed to save the Harvest Goddess. Like Animal Crossing, it also had fishing. ANSWER: Harvest Moon: Magical Melody [C] A sequel to this GBA game would find more of the title people. It can connect to both A Wonderful Life and Harvest Moon DS to unlock an assortment of extras. ANSWER: Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town [D] The first Harvest Moon game in 3D, it featured girls to date like Maria and Karen. ANSWER: Harvest Moon 64 6) Identify some of these characters from fighting games that have appeared on Nintendo systems, FTPE. [10] Growing up in the rain forests of Brazil after a plane he was flying on crashed when he was an infant, this Street Fighter II's character is recognized by his mother mother by the anklets he wears. ANSWER: Blanka (prompt on "Jimmy") [10] Introduced in Soul Calibur II, she is the younger sister of Sophitia from Soul Edge. She uses the Omega Sword with the Nemea Shield and hails from Greece. ANSWER: Cassandra Alexander [10] You could play as characters like Titanic Tim, El Stingray or Biff Slamkovich in this Capcom pro wrestling game for the SNES. ANSWER: Saturday Night Slam Masters 7) Name some of these platformers, FTPE. [10] The two main characters of this series used weapons like boomerangs, bones, and wheels to kill Dinosaurs in this SNES platformer. ANSWER: Joe & Mac [10] The main character's cane was used as a weapon and a pogo stick in this NES platformer also starring Magica De Spell as an enemy. ANSWER: Ducktales [10] The protagonist's red shield was used heavily in this game, often when fighting the five Indora Gods. Each correct answer is worth 10 points, and the 60 second clock will begin after I finish reading the first question. 1) Created by Toshio Iwai, this "music video" game for the DS was released only through the Nintendo World Store and online retailers. ANSWER: Electroplankton 2) The Elite Forces entry in this series was released for the Gameboy Color. It lacked the Hitler references of the Japanese only first game in this grappling-intensive series. ANSWER: Bionic Commando 3) Taking place in Castle Oblivion, this GBA action RPG bridged the gap between its PS2 predecessor and successor. It sees Sora revisiting most of the places he had been in the first game. ANSWER: Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories 4) "The Sun Is In Your Hands" in this Hideo Kojima game for the GBA that included a solar panel requiring you to play in direct sunlight to do well in the game. ANSWER: Boktai (also accept Bokura no Taiyō) 5) While at the Soviet Academy of Sciences, this Russian computer engineer created Tetris, a game that became synonymous with the original Gameboy. ANSWER: Alexey Pajitnov 6) The spiritual successor to a 1994 remake, this Nintendo puzzle game featured the main character looking for a key to escape each level and also contained miniature toy versions of the title plumber. ANSWER: Mario vs. Donkey Kong 7) This cult GBA hit by Hudson Soft had you playing as Joe Osugi, a cop who had the ability to fire throwing stars and stealthily kill bad guys with a sword. ANSWER: Ninja Five-O 8) Released in late 2002, this accessory by Triton Labs required you to disassemble your Gameboy Advance and solder some wires to install a front light. Mine got hair in it. ANSWER: Afterburner 9) The star of the 1980 game, Ball, he possesses juggling skills and is typically colored all black with a gray outline. His level in another game is FlatZone. ANSWER: Mr. Game & Watch 10) Allegedly a tool used by child predators, this built in DS communication tool allows people to locally exchange messages and pictures. ANSWER: Pictochat Third Parties Round: All of these questions relate to games developed by companies other than Nintendo for Nintendo systems. ANSWER: U.N. Squadron 2) The first online Dreamcast game, this Sega party game featuring cats and mice was ported to the GBA for that system's launch. ANSWER: ChuChu Rocket! 3) Created by Yasumi Matsuno, this SNES strategy game published by Enix and later Atlus was subtitled, March of the Black Queen. 8 ANSWER: Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen 4) Containing an impressive play book of two running plays and two passing plays, this NES football game nevertheless was notable for its early use of licensed players. ANSWER: Tecmo Bowl 5) Designed for deforestation work, this Robot Master from the original Megaman game was weak to the Super Arm and Mega Blaster. ANSWER: Cut Man 6) The four characters in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles were searching for the crystals to rescue them from this poisonous gas enveloping the world. ANSWER: Miasma 7) Although he also battles demons and aliens, this Acclaim character is probably best known for hunting Dinosaurs in the Lost Land in several N64 games. ANSWER: Turok 8) This mainstay of the Contra series fires multiple red bullets at 45 degree angles, making it useful for both close range and faraway targets. ANSWER: Spread Gun 9) Appearing in sequels subtitled The Dark Sword of Chaos and The Ancient Ship of Doom, this Team Ninja main character's first game was Ninja Gaiden. ANSWER: Ryu Hayabusa (accept either answer) 10) Master Higgins was the skateboarding hero of this tropical Hudson series that debuted on the NES. ANSWER: Hudson's Adventure Island Accessories Round: All of these questions will be relate to accessories, peripherals and add-ons that have been used for Nintendo systems. ANSWER: DK Bongos 5) Much more successful than the NES Satellite, this wireless controller with 16 different channels currently comes in light gray and platinum color schemes. ANSWER: Wavebird 6) The controller for this Chinese only Nintendo system looks like a Dreamcast's, and modified N64 games plug into the controller's base. 9 ANSWER: Nintendo iQue Player 7) Plugging into the bottom of the SNES, this satellite expansion was notable for its Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Ancient Stone Tablets. ANSWER: Satellaview (also accept BS-X) 8) This robust arcade joystick for the NES contained turbo and slow motion buttons and could also be plugged into both controller ports. ANSWER: NES Advantage 9) This Famicom add-on that resided underneath the system allowed users to save their own levels in the Japanese version of Excitebike and to copy data for new games at special kiosks. ANSWER: Famicom Disc System 10) Memorably appearing in The Wizard, this NES controller was pretty accurately described as being "so bad". Each correct answer is worth 10 points, and the 60 second clock will begin after I finish reading the first question. 1) Thought to have drown at the beginning of Golden Sun, this party leader of The Lost Ages eventually goes on to light the four light houses in the game. ANSWER: Felix (Golden Sun) 2) Because it doesn't factor in EVs, this hard to find vitamin used to level Pokemon up by one level is typically not used en masse by the best trainers. ANSWER: Rare Candy 3) You play as Will, Freedan, and Shadow in this Enix RPG for the SNES where you explore real life locations like the Great Wall of China and the Nazca Lines before going to the Tower of Babel.
