Waters Corporation Alliance HPLC
The Waters Alliance system was first released in 1996 and since then a number of
incremental upgrades have been made to improve reliability and competitiveness.
The heart of the Alliance HPLC is a 2695 separations module made up of a combined solvent
delivery system and autosampler. A detector must be configured to make a working system.
Comparison between the Waters Alliance and Varian 920-LC
The Waters Alliance compared to the Varian 920-LC has

Limited flow rate range of 0.010 mL/min to 5 mL/min compared to a range 0.001
mL/min to 9.999 mL/min on the Varian 920-LC.

A maximum pressure of 5000 psi with a flow rate of up to 3 mL/min compared to 6000
psi up to 5 mL/min for the Varian 920-LC

Only 120 HPLC vials in the autosampler compared to 200 x 1.6 mL vials in the 920LC

A 60oC maximum column heater temperature compared to the 65oC maximum of the
920-LC
What Waters say of the 2695 Solvent Management System
The 2695 Separations Module’s solvent management system degasses and blends up to four
chromatographic solvents in precise proportions for smooth, pulse-free solvent delivery, while
the latest PerformancePLUS check-valve technology assures minimal downtime.
Claimed features of the 2695 solvent delivery system are:
 Serial flow path with only two inlet check valves, reducing complexity and enhancing
overall ruggedness
 Vacuum degassing using ultra-high efficiency second-generation polymer membrane
technology
 Independently driven pistons produce pulse-free solvent flow without use of pulse
dampeners
 Fixed delay volume (regardless of system back pressure) for consistent, predictable
chromatography
 A programmable flow rate range that covers two orders of magnitude (from 50
microliters to five milliliters per minute) without the need for hardware modifications
 Tool-free routine maintenance on plungers/seals/seal-wash

An automated active plunger seal wash is standard on all Alliance HPLC Systems
What Waters say of the 2695 Autosampler
The autosampler module in the 2695 holds up to 120 industry-standard vials can be
accommodated in the 2695 Separations Module’s five individual sample carousels. Sample
queues are quick to set up—whether it’s just one sample or a sequence of multiple methods
from different analysts.
Claimed features of the 2695 Sample management (autosampler) are:
 Reproducible injections from one to hundreds of microliters—compatible with any
analytical scale LC column chemistry
 Variable volume injections with no need to swap loops for analytical methods
 Carryover management via a programmable needle wash cycle and an active needle
wash solution (without wash vials)
 Programmable inject-needle height that accommodates various vial geometries and
takes into account vial bottom thickness
 Programmable syringe draw rate for viscous samples/solvents
 Five independent carousels: Run samples in one carousel while prepping the next
sequence in another, enabling new samples/carousels to be added into the system—
without disturbing the ongoing sample queue
 Sampling routines for automated reference peak addition or automated pre-column
derivitization procedures
 Tool-free lower seal-wash frit and injection syringe replacement, for easy routine
maintenance
What Waters say about Empower Chromatography Data Software






It’s quick and easy to store and retrieve chromatography data using an embedded,
relational database.
Take advantage of more precise peak integration calculations with ApexTrack™
algorithm.
Easily control Waters ACQUITY UPLC™ and Alliance® HPLC systems as well as
third-party HPLC and GC systems.
Enhanced detection capabilities are available when using Waters mass detectors or
the Waters 2996 Photodiode Array Detector.
Scalable, modular architecture allows seamless growth from a single workstation to
an enterprise-wide system.
Designed for a data-secured regulatory lab environment – three clicks to compliance.
Detection
Waters offer a wide range of detectors for the Alliance system from UV Vis, PDA, RI, ELS,
Electrochemical and conductivity detectors. Waters detectors are located on top of the 2695
separations module, restricting access and limiting the amount of solvent storage available on
top of the separations module. In contrast, the Varian 920-LC is accommodates up to 2
detectors freeing up the entire upper surface for solvent storage or a third detector.
