Instituto Asunción de México Sofía Salcedo English 5th A CCH I would like to start this speech by explaning what the Assumption means to me. My parents chose it because it had special characteristics such as the teaching of values and solid morals. I have come to realize that since Madre Maria Eugenia founded the Assumption it has been doing just that. Teaching and forming individuals who can make a difference in this world. People who have character, integrity and values. I have been here for fourteen years, but that has been enough to have developed a sense of belonging to this special community. The way of teaching, the people, the experiences, and even the friends I have encountered here have shaped me. Here at the Assumption grades are important, of course, but they also care about many other things; they want us to be able to have our own opinions, to speak our minds, to be responsible of our freedom. We are taught to infere, and come to conclusions based on facts, but above all, to follow the teachings and the examples of Madre Maria Eugenia. I have been taught values at home, and the Assumption is my second home where I have been taught to respect my teachers and classmates and to have priorities in my life, when there are different roads to take and I have to decide which one to take. The Assumption has given me the chance to meet very nice people. Not all of them are my friends, but they all have been my classmates since I started preschool. I have made many friends and I know our friendship will be forever lasting. If it weren´t for The Assumption I would have never met them. I must admit I am not the same person I was 14 years ago, when I was crying for my mommy on my first day of school back then when I thought she was my whole world. Today I know there is another world out there, full of people who will contribute one way or the other to my growth. When I reflect upon the time I have spent here at my school, I realize that most of the time I have lived very happy moments, although there have been moments of sadness, frustration, anger, and dissappointment. Of course I have overcome those obstacles and now I undestand that those experiences have helped me grow. I will never forget the field trips, retreats, “campamentos, y coronas de adviento”, The “misiones” and sports activities that we have had. 1 That is something that makes this school very special. It gives us the opportunity to reflect, to share with the group, and the surroundings, to be aware of the different realities. These activities have been a lot of fun and have a special place in my heart. The Assumption has had important changes in these 50 years that have helped it grow both as an institution and as a community. Fifty years ago in its beginnings the school was only for girls and after some time boys joined the school which is great because today it is hard to find a Catholic school for both boys and girls. Our school has new buildings such as SUMA, new classrooms, more teachers and students. It has become a strong community where everyone, parents, teachers, workers, nuns, and students have come together as one big family because we are good people doing what is right. The Assumption is not only an institution, but a way of life. It is good to be part of it, and to contribute with it even if it is only for a few years. We should all be very proud to be part of this 50 TH celebration. Thank you for your attention. 2
