SURGEON We are seeking to appoint a sixth Consultant General & Colorectal Surgeon to The Shrewsbury &
Telford Hospital NHS Trust, based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. This is a new appointment to join the
existing 5 full-time colorectal surgeons and attracts 10 Programmed Activities per week and an on-call
commitment. We are a busy colorectal unit, seeing over 300 cancers a year including Bowel Cancer screening
patients. This appointment is to help us maintain a high quality of service and maintain national cancer targets.
The unit currently consists of 5 Consultant Colorectal Surgeons, 2 ST3+, 3 Trust Grade Surgeons and 2 Core
Trainees/FY2s. We have recently invested substantial sums on modern laparoscopic equipment including
harmonic, ligasure and HD stacks, and we have an active laparoscopic colorectal programme, together with an
established enhanced recovery programme. In addition we are in the process of developing TEM and also
upgrading our diagnostic equipment for pelvic floor disorders. There are detailed plans for the development of a
pelvic floor service. We would welcome a relevant sub-specialty interest from the successful candidate. We are
active in the teaching of both medical students and surgical trainees and we are an associate teaching hospital for

Teaching Fellow in Anaesthetics Keele University School of Medicine (Shropshire Campus) Based at the Princess
Royal Hospital Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospitals Commensurate with appropriate point on clinical
fellow scale Fixed for one year from August 2011. Full Time The purpose of this post is to identify and train
doctors to be clinical teachers. It is aimed at applicants looking for a post at ST3 level or above. This is a
challenging post that will test skills that are not the focus of most clinical training roles, yet are highly relevant and
transferable to senior clinical roles. This post will encompass more than just teaching. The successful applicant
will take part in various modes of assessment and appraisal. You will also have a significant role in the
development of the critical care component of module (year) 5 of the Keele University Medical School Curriculum.
The post holder will also support teaching in the “module spine” component of the fourth year of the curriculum,
including ethics, drug administration and pain management. The curriculum is in a continuous process of
development, presenting other opportunities for training and participation in other varied teaching activities. These
include problem based learning, clinical and communication skills tuition, and use of advanced medical simulation
(via use of SimMan 3G). The successful applicant will be enrolled in the Keele University Teacher the Teachers
Course and will be funded to study for the Keele Post Graduate Certificate of Medical Education. Consideration
will also be given for funding of other relevant educational courses. Recent post holders have received formal
training in advanced medical simulation. The timetable is flexible to allow continued development of anaesthetic
skills and every attempt will be made to match clinical sessions with teaching fellow’s individual wishes. There will
be two anaesthetic lists per week allocated to the successful applicant with opportunities for more clinical activity
to support undergraduate teaching. There will also be the opportunity to negotiate out of hours banding.

birth rate in the county and the departments desire to supply high quality acute care in keeping with CNST

CONSULTANT HAEMATOLOGIST (2 POSTS) An excellent opportunity has arisen to become part of the
Haematology team at The Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital NHS Trust. These two posts, one replacement and one
new, are substantive appointments based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) but with one day a week at the
Princess Royal Hospital Telford. There is a 1:5 on-call commitment and 11 Programmed Activities per week.
Applications are welcome from those unable to work full-time for personal reasons. You will be part of a team of 4
Haematologists providing care to the population of Shropshire and Mid-Wales – catchment 510,000 people. The
Department offers a full range of services and on the RSH site there is a dedicated in-patient unit which includes 6
side rooms (hepa-filtered air) and we give induction therapy for acute leukaemia and have a shared care
programme for patients undergoing autologous marrow transplantation (JACIE accredited). The hospital has a full
range of back up services on site – including ITU, renal dialysis and bronchoscopy on site. There are dedicated
day case facilities on each site and a state of the art collocated Out-patient/Day Case Unit (10 stations) is due to

We are seeking two people with excellent communication, IT and organisational skills, and the ability to work in an
extremely busy Endoscopy Unit as part of a multi-disciplinary team. We have 2 part-time vacancies, each for
25.5hrs per week. These hours will be worked flexibly between Mon-Fri, 8am – 5:30pm. The clerical officer role
covers both the booking office and the reception area. Both of these areas are very busy and see a high turnover
of patients on a daily basis. Your role will contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the unit by providing a
complete service to patients. You will be responsible for ensuring all notes are available for patients prior to
admission, for prepping the notes, providing reception cover, booking patients onto the ward via the computerized
records system, the efficient and accurate recording of patient related information and for the timely discharge of
patients from the unit and processing of notes for transit to medical secretaries. You will also be booking patient
appoinments, managing the diary and giving advice where necessary. Previous clerical experience, preferably in a
healthcare setting is preferable, as is proven computer literacy and an understanding of the trusts Patient

TEMPORARY 12 MONTH SECONDMENT OPPORTUNITY Ward 22 SR is a 40 bedded ward with a specialist
interest in Acute Stroke Medicine, acute elderly care and rehabilitation. We are seeking to employ a enthusiastic
dynamic and highly motivated individual with experience of nursing Stroke patients in the acute phase of their
illness within the Acute Stroke Unit on Ward 22SR. The postholder will be required to function as a competent
clinical practitioner, delivering direct patient care, overseeing nursing practice, whilst co-ordinating the ward to
facilitate effective patient flow. You will possess excellent organisational and interpersonal skills and be able to
demonstrate leadership ability. It is expected you will influence teamwork within the unit and provide a role model
to the nursing team. You will work closely with the Stroke Nurse Specialist and Ward Manager to take a lead in the
delivery of 24 hour Stroke Thrombolysis, which is a major service development within the area. Up to date
knowledge regarding Acute Stroke Care is essential in order for the post-holder to function in a pro-active manner
to assist the organisation to meet targets within Stroke care. In the absence of the Ward Manager, the post holder
will deputise, driving forward evidence based practice and taking responsibility for the supervision of staff working
within corporate policies and guidelines. We encourage professional development and the successful applicant
would be offered full support and an induction period on the ward. You wil be expected to undertake an accredited
stroke course if you are not in current possession and we will support you to complete this course. The post

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced RGN who wishes to play a lead role in the ongoing
development of our specialist Inflammatory Bowel Disease and in-patient gastroenterology services within the
Trust. The posts will be 50:50 Inflammatory Bowel Disease and in-patient gastroenterology & general/internal
medicine. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate continuing professional development relevant to
the Gastroentrology speciality and have current experience of working within a Gastroenterology setting (such as
Acute medical /surgical wards or Endoscopy) With excellent communication and negotiation skills you will be able
to influence, motivate, support and assist in the integration of the Trust wide multidisciplinary teams. With a desire
for self development and an ability to provide teaching and education to staff at all levels you will take strive to
maintain, develop and monitor the quality of the service through audit of practice , surveillance and planning. You
must be a committed, enthusiastic and highly organized individual who has sufficient experience to respond
appropriately to and deal with the many conflicting priorities of the clinical acute care environment . You will be
able to work autonomously to meet deadlines and goals but still seek collaborative relationships with the
multidisciplinary team, acting as a resource and lead where applicable. This post provides an excellent career
opportunity for someone who is clinically credible but wishes to further develop skills whilst actively coordinating
and monitoring clinical activities to ensure efficient and effective utilization of resources.

BAND 5 – STAFF NURSE – BANK We are looking to recruit Band 5 Nurses to join our Clinical Nurse Bank. You
will be part of a flexible workforce and will be called upon to work on a variety of wards and areas to cover staffing
shortfalls. Whilst we would prefer experience in an acute care setting, this can also include student nurse
placements. You will able to demonstrate you have experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team in addition to
excellent communication skills. You should be able to organise your own workload, as well as taking direction
