specifically relevant to preschool supervisors. This includes department updates and information relating to the Early Learning Development
Standards (ELDS), the Early Childhood Comprehensive Assessment System, and Step Up to Quality (SUTQ).The meetings will highlight the
alignment of early childhood topics to school-age initiatives and practices like formative assessment, the Ohio Improvement Process (OIP),

Presented by Margie Spino, Ph.D., this half-day session will provide information on the Childhood Outcomes Summary Form (COSF), a sevenpoint scale for summarizing information related to a child’s progress on three childhood outcome areas required by the Office of Special
Education Programs (OSEP). The training is required for new preschool special education supervisors, teachers, and interested related service

OHIO LEARNING STANDARDS – EXTENDED: OVERVIEW FOR TEACHERS OF STUDENTS WITH COMPLEX NEEDS

Presented by Aaron Weisbrod, M.Ed., and Cindy Ford, M.Ed., this professional development will serve as an introduction and walk through of
the Ohio Learning Standards – Extended, using Modules 1 and 2 of the modules developed by the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence
(OCALI). Teachers and related services personnel will leave the session with the ability to understand and implement practices that enable
students with complex needs to access multiple ways of learning and demonstrating content knowledge.

PBIS TEAM TRAINING

Presented by Tamie Cruz, M.A., and Margie Spino, Ph.D., this two-day training will provide district and community school teams with the
essential elements for implementing Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS). Topics will include exploring school-wide attitudes
regarding behavior, determining what behavior intervention efforts are already in place, and choosing the next steps. Teams will begin to
develop a district-wide common office discipline referral form, three-to-five expectations, and a behavior matrix. Teams will complete the

RECIPROCAL TEACHING: LESSONS FOR INCREASED COMPREHENSION

Reciprocal teaching is a highly effective, research-based instructional practice that enables students to be involved in their own learning
through small group reading sessions. The State Support Team Region 1 is pleased to offer the Early Learning series for teachers in
kindergarten through grade three [K-3] and the Primary series for teachers in grades four through six [4-6]. Each series is for teachers who are
working in classrooms that include students with disabilities and those at risk of academic failure. The Early Learning series will take place

REGIONAL OIP INTERNAL FACILITATORS MEETING

This meeting provides technical assistance and support to new and existing districts that are implementing the Ohio Improvement Process
(OIP). Participants will work on implementation of the 5-Step Process at all team levels—district level, building level, and teacher level (DLT,
BLT and TBTs). The morning session will focus on OIP orientation. The afternoon session will focus on Building Level Team and Teacher Based

HIGH SCHOOL SCHEDULING: ENHANCING INSTRUCTION FOR STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

The creation of an effective school schedule is a key component of every high school principal’s work and is an essential leadership task. To
support this process, the State Support Team Region 1 is sponsoring High School Scheduling: Enhancing Instruction for Student Achievement,
presented by Michael D. Rettig, Ph.D., on October 28, 2014. This full-day session for teams will focus on increasing participants’
understanding of how to create an effective school schedule, with an emphasis on considering the needs of students with disabilities. Team
registration is required. District- or building-level teams should be composed of five or less members, one of which must be an administrator.
Members can include general education teachers, intervention specialists, curriculum directors, pupil service directors, principals, and

2014 POSTSECONDARY TRANSITION EXPO
REGIONAL EXPO PRESENTATIONS: NOVEMBER 12-14, 2014
The State Support Team Region 1 will be presenting Regional Postsecondary Transition Expo presentations during November 2014. The
Regional Postsecondary Transition Expo provides resources and support to students throughout northwest Ohio as they begin to consider and
prepare for employment and educational opportunities after high school.
Highlighting all events is an inspirational keynote presentation by LeDerick R. Horne, a nationally recognized spoken word poet, playwright,
speaker, entrepreneur and advocate for people with disabilities. The expo focuses on the importance of recognizing individual student needs,
self-advocacy, and prioritizing needs and preferences regarding the transition planning process. Participating schools have received

CO-TEACHING FOR K-12 TEAMS: STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS
NOVEMBER 11, 2014, & JANUARY 9, 2015 | MARY MURRAY & STEVE CILLO
This series by Mary Murray, Ed.D., and Steve Cillo, M.Ed., will take place on November 11, 2014, and January 9, 2015. The co-teaching process
has been proven effective in helping all students access the general education curriculum, including students with disabilities and those at risk
for academic failure. Team registration is required. Teams should be composed of two teachers—a general education teacher and special
education intervention specialist who work in kindergarten through grade 12 classrooms. Co-teaching teams will have additional support in

CAREER CONNECTIONS: USING THE NEW OHIO MEANS JOBS K-12 WEBSITE

Career planning and job placement are key components of the age 14 transition requirements and results driven accountability in Ohio. The
new Ohio Means Jobs Website K-12 has replaced the Ohio Career Information System (OCIS) that many educators relied on for career
exploration and information. This half-day session will enable guidance counselors, educators, career-tech educators, administrators, and
transition specialists to learn about the Ohio Means Jobs K-12 Website. Participants will learn how to create an account, identify and explore
the tools, and select those they can use to help students participate in career exploration and age-appropriate transition assessments. The
half-day sessions will be presented on December 3, 2014, (morning) and December 10, 2014 (morning and afternoon). Registration is through

MAJOR UPDATE ON HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
GRADUATION POINT SYSTEM AND ACCEPTABLE TESTS & FAQS
The State Board approved two essential elements of the new requirements: the graduation points system and a list of tests students can take
in lieu of Ohio’s tests. A summary of the State Board’s major decisions is now available; the steps to finalize the requirements and other issues

ACCESSIBILITY FOR TECHNOLOGY-ENHANCED ASSESSMENTS PROJECT
The Accessibility for Technology-Enhanced Assessments project is developing accessible tests for students with vision or motor disabilities
based on innovative, technology-enhanced computerized assessments. The project is seeking students with vision or motor disabilities
(grades 3 through 12) to participate in short sample tests of English language arts and math. Complete information is available from

OLAC WEBSITE OFFERS ONLINE GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES
20 RESEARCH-BASED LEARNING MODULES
The Ohio Leadership Advisory Council has partnered with the Ohio Department of Education to make available free contact hours online

UDL IN THE CLASSROOM
NEW VIDEOS FEATURE OHIO SCHOOLS
The National Center on Universal Design for Learning is pleased to announce a new resource on UDL in the Classroom featuring Ohio schools.
