It seems as each newsletter brings with it some sort of announcement of developments in our staff. With this edition we'd like to welcome two new employees. Fred Scheltz comes from the "retired, but not ready to retire" group. For many years, Fred worked at NCR as a technical writer for cash registers and whatnot. These days, he'll be manning our shipping/receiving and inventory control department making sure your packages stay out of trouble (not to mention keeping him out of trouble). Greg Sidelinger starts at the other spectrum of his career, as he's a recent graduate of Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. His Bachelor's degree in Management Information Science has prepared him particularly well for his forays into PC/Network Technician work here. We look forward to him helping out on all your LAN, WAN and Internet connectivity issues in the near future. Please welcome both Fred & Greg to the INFONETICS family if you should happen to speak with them in the coming days. Look for their short bio inside this newsletter. This edition of the newsletter also contains an important announcement of our upcoming INFONETICS' User's Group 2002 meeting. It's back "on-the-road again" so check out the details inside. Long overdue are welcomes to a number of new customers who've joined the INFONETICS family of customers this summer. Please welcome; Chip, Michelle & Mark of Airtec in Altoona, WI; Bob, Judy, Pat, Bill, Pete & Dennis of Nevada Compressed Gas of Las Vegas, NV; B.J., Steve, Lynn, Sandy & Becky at Natwel Supply in San Antonio, TX; as well as John, Rob & Melinda from Dahl Welding in Council Bluffs, IA. Whew, what a busy summer it's been. Welcome to all. Scheltz, Shipping/Receiving Fred has worked on electronic equipment while serving the USAF for 5 years. His professional career was with NCR Corp, for 27 years, as a Computer Repairman (back in the days when computers still had vacuum tubes) and Technical Writer. fls@infonetx.com Counting himself among the "retired, but not yet ready to retire" group, Fred now stays out of trouble by manning INFONETICS' shipping/receiving and inventory control department. In his off hours, Fred's interests include golf, watching his son play softball, attending church, reading books, and participating heavily in the good works of the Knights of Columbus. Gregory D. Sidelinger, PC/Network Tech Greg is a keyboard sling'ng, code writing, system admin'ng computer geek. He can't recall a time when there was not a computer in front of him. As a graduate of Penn State (go Buckeyes!) he received his Bachelors of Science in Management Information Systems and got his first real job with INFONETICS shortly after graduating. When he is not at work he can be found in front of one of his many systems learning something new about computers. gds@infonetx.com INFONETICS HITS THE AUSTIN CITY LIMITS It's been said that everything is bigger in Texas! That's certainly the case when it comes to the number of INFONETICS users in the state. In early 2002 Texas Welding Supply Company in Austin, Texas decided that INFONETICS was the right choice to take their business to the next level. As Texas Welding Supply owner Bud Brooks described it, "we finally stopped procrastinating and decided to start running our business instead of just operating it" while talking about the move they made from Quickbooks to the INFONETICS system. We were glad to help. Bud should know a thing or two about the welding supply industry, after all he's been in the business since 1961. It was then that he first went to work for a distributor in San Antonio, Texas. From there he went on to work with a couple of wholesalers before spending 21 years with Miller Electric in both Texas and Wisconsin. Finally in 1994 Bud returned from Wisconsin to Texas and got to work building Texas Welding Supply from the ground up. After eight years in business Texas Welding is up to 10 employees and three trucks that serve a 60 mile radius in eight counties. In addition, Bud also acquired a company called Air Action that specializes in helium, balloons, and related accessories. Air Action continues to operate under that name and has been integrated into the INFONETICS system with Texas Welding Supply. With an eye on the future, the good people at Texas Welding Supply see expansion as a reality down the road. Backed by such key people like Distribution Manager Mike Aufdenkamp, the sky is the limit for the Austin-based business. Please welcome Bud, Mike and the rest of Texas Welding Supply to the INFONETICS family! Three years ago, INFONETICS blazed the technological leading edge (sometimes called the "bleeding" edge) by implementing new "Cable modem" based Internet Access from Time Warner. Considered state-of-the-art in high speed, affordable, broadband access, the RoadRunner service served well the early days of our web and email hosting service. However, speeds and throughput slowly dropped as others in the local area connected to the same backbone, rendering our connection less than optimal. Earlier this year, we began a search for a replacement. High-speed was a top priority, as well as availability of "static IP" addresses for future expandability, and of course affordability. All three criteria were met with the recent successful deployment of SBC/Ameritech's DSL service. The new service was installed in early July and tested side-by-side with the cable modem. Extensive benchmarking and reliability testing was done, and eventually a "go-live" date was settled on. A quick switch of cables on an early Sunday morning, and our servers were up and running. By the next morning our new IP address had bubbled out through the Internet world, and we were once again serving our domains to the universe! DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) continues to make tremendous strides towards dominating the broadband (but affordable) Internet Access market. With pricing that competes favorably with traditional "dial-up" access, it promises to be the future for many companies. If you'd like INFONETICS to investigate implementing or upgrading your connection to DSL, just give us a ring. INFOGROUP 2002 ROADSHOW INFONETICS is taking it's annual User's Group meeting "on-the-road again". As one of our most popular INFOGroup events, the late-summer retreat once again returns to its roots as a traveling road show with this years event slated to take place in New England this fall. The focus topic will be "Use of the Internet as a communications vehicle", or "RITA+VPN" for short! We'll explore one of the most exciting nuances in the development of the Internet with its use as a low-cost, high speed replacement for traditional leased lines to connect remote branches and traveling personnel. Plus, we'll have plenty of opportunity to meet and greet INFONETICS personnel, as well as new product demonstration, and question & answer session.
