Dear Families,
Last week the third, fourth and fifth grade students completed the State assessments
(OAKS) in reading and math. The fifth graders also took a science test. Below are our
school scores (L) compared to the District (D) and the State (S).

As the above graph shows our assessment scores are considerably higher than the District
and State averages. I am proud of our students’ efforts and the dedicated teachers who
work diligently to ensure all students are successful.
I am happy to announce that music is coming back to Llewellyn next year. A few weeks
ago, I mentioned that music was cut due to budget constraints. Due to the efforts of our
superintendent, Carole Smith, the teacher’s union and the City of Portland programs that
were eliminated a few weeks ago have been reinstated.

Field Day: On Friday June 8th, 2012 Llewellyn students will participate in Field Day.
We need parent volunteers to run the events... if you are available in the morning…
8:30-10:30 and/or the afternoon… 12:00-2:00… on Friday June 8th, 2012, please reply
to Sally Doherty by email... sdoherty@pps.net to let her know that you can volunteer for
the 2012 Llewellyn Field Day.
Spring Music Assemblies: Mr. Fitz, our music teacher, has planned an assembly for
each grade level to perform their music accomplishments. Parents are welcome to come
attend any of the following assemblies:
Tuesday, May 29th - 1:15 – Grade 3
Wednesday, May 30th – 1:15 – Grade 1
Thursday, May 31st – 1:00 – Grade 5 (along with the Choir and Band)
Tuesday, June 5th – 1:15 – Grade 2
Thursday, June 7th – 1:15 – Grade 4
Read to Ride and Win a Bike: Exercise your mind and enter for a chance to win a
brand new bike! Thanks to a generous donation from our neighborhood Masons, we will
be giving away two bikes for each grade level. The Read to Ride game started last week
and goes through May 31st. All students who complete the required reading time will be
entered in a drawing for the bikes.
Game boards were sent home earlier. Students color in one circle for each 30 minutes
spent reading. Younger students may count time being read to. Parents sign and date the
game board. Turn in the completed game board by May 31st. Game boards without a
parent signature will not be entered in the drawing. Good luck and happy reading!
Safe Routes to School Spring Survey: Twice a year, Safe Routes mails a survey to
families of K-5 students at schools across the city. The survey asks how students travel
to school and also the barriers that keep them from walking and biking more. Please mail
completed surveys in the postage-paid envelope provided. When parents mail back the
survey by the deadline, they get a chance to win a bike and accessories for their child.

Collage, Cloud Cap Games & Blue Kangaroo Fundraiser for Sellwood Middle
School Foundation: All day May 22nd Collage and Cloud Cap Games will donate 15%
of all purchases and Blue Kangaroo will donate house coffee sales. They are located on
the corner of SE 13th and Lexington Street in Sellwood.
PTA NEWS: Llewellyn PTA, as an affiliated constituent of Oregon PTA, pledges that membership in
PTA shall be open, without discrimination to anyone who believe in and supports the mission and purposes
of National PTA.
KICK OFF YOUR SUMMER READING AT THE SPRING BOGO BOOKFAIR:
*ALL ITEMS BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE!* When: May 21st – 25th – Every day in
the Library. Hours: BEFORE SCHOOL 7:45-8:00 a.m. (please enter the building
through the back door on the northwest corner of the school in the mornings) and
AFTER SCHOOL from 2:15-3:30 p.m. Also, this is a great time to find a new book
for your classroom libraries! See your Teacher Wish List in the library.
Pizzicato Dough 4 Dollars: Parent volunteer needed for next year to take over the
Pizzicato Dough 4 Dollars fundraiser. Small time commitment and easy to do with big
benefits for the school.

Neighborhood Clean-up Day: A friendly reminder from the Green Team: SellwoodMoreland Neighborhood Clean-up Day is this Saturday, May 19th, from 9am to 2pm at
Westmoreland Park! This is an excellent opportunity to get rid of unwanted items that
can't (or shouldn't) go into the trash, such as scrap wood, appliances, styrofoam,
electronics and more. The cost starts at $6 per vehicle. Note that you must be a SellwoodMoreland resident to participate (ID required) and hazardous materials are NOT
accepted. Need more information or want to help? Call 503-794-8212. If you have

Carnival Passports: Purchase your Carnival passports now, and avoid waiting in line at
the Carnival. With passports in hand, your family can bypass the passport (a.k.a. ticket)
booth and immediately start to shoot arrows, pet a lizard, spray their hair blue, construct
juggling balls, listen to music and eat. Passports are $5 per child (adults play for free)
and everyone can play as many games as often as they wish. Presale forms are going
home this Friday, and there will be extras in the office. Our goal is that every Llewellyn
family that wants to come to the carnival, can, so if you would like a scholarship to the
Carnival, please indicate this on your passport preorder form, let your teacher know, or
ask Jean. Forms are due back next Friday, May 25th. Passports will also be on sale
at the carnival. Each child needs a passport to play the games.
Carnival Volunteers: We could still use a handful of volunteers during the carnival,
including a larger clean-up crew. Please sign-up on-line at

Carnival Toy Donations: If you have not already done so, please collect those gently
used prizes and toys to donate to the Carnival, such as: rubber and plastic animals, balls,
Pokémon cards, toy cars, art supplies, whistles, spinning tops, card games, Legos, seed
packets, magnets, marbles, and a small cannon (OK, just joking on this one). You can
put them in the box, outside of the office

Insider conversations include: Summertime Kiddical Mass starting and ending at
Sellwood Park, every late opening Wednesday starting next school year Kiddical Mass
Ride, Bike Train Signs, Map rev.2, Listserve completion, etc...Look for bike displays and
increased signage around Llewellyn soon.
We have received a helmet for each grade level as well as other items for raffles and give
aways. Please help your child or student complete and hand in their raffle/pledge form to
their teacher. Captains will pick up the pledge forms from teachers at the end of the
week. When enough raffle forms have been received, we will announce a date and time
for the raffle. Please encourage your children to participate in the Reading Drive for
Bikes. In June, there will be twelve bikes raffled off to participants in these initiatives!
Hopefully, we'll see you on the Friday Bike Train, May 18, 25, June 1 and 8th!

Sign up now for Llewellyn Under the Stars! General Information and registration
forms are available for the Campus Campout event on June 15th-16th. Just go
to www.thellewellynfoundation.org and download the registration form and waiver or
pick them in the office. Camping spots will be available for a minimum donation of $50,
but please consider donating more. The money we raise helps fund teaching positions not
covered by PPS. Completed forms and waivers should be returned to the school office.
