CHESAPEAKE CENTER FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM 1617 Cedar Road Chesapeake, Virginia 23322 (757) 547-0134 kathy.jones@cpschools.com Adult Application Information for Academic Year 2015-2016 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Practical Nursing Program at the Center for Science and Technology (CCST) is offered to selected adults in Chesapeake and surrounding communities on a space-available basis. This eighteen-month curriculum, approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing, is comprised of approximately 1500 hours of theory, laboratory practice and clinical experience in area hospitals and health care facilities. Curriculum content includes introduction to healthcare and professional issues, anatomy and physiology, growth and development, nutrition, pharmacology, nursing fundamentals, medical-surgical nursing, obstetrical nursing, pediatric nursing, mental health nursing, geriatric nursing, and introduction to leadership and management. The Practical Nursing Program is articulated with the Associate Degree Nursing Programs at Thomas Nelson Community College and Tidewater Community College. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the National Council of State Boards Licensing Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). Pass rates on the NCLEX-PN for graduates of the previous five years are as follows: 2010 – 94%; 2011-- 83.3%; 2012 – 93.3%; 2013 – 78%; 2014 – 100%. Practical Nursing I and II classes are scheduled from early September through mid-June, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 11:35 a.m. The Nursing Fundamentals clinical experiences at a local hospital (approximately 7 days) are scheduled from 6:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. during the fourth nineweeks. Practical Nursing III classes are scheduled from mid-August through mid-April, Monday through Friday. Theory classes are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at CCST. Clinical experiences are scheduled from 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Occasionally, evening clinicals and/or 12-hour shifts are scheduled in specialty rotations to enable students to achieve objectives of the Practical Nursing curriculum. All clinical sites are in the Hampton Roads area. TUITION Currently, tuition is $2241.00 per academic year ($1,120.50 per semester). Textbooks, assessment fees, uniforms and supplies average approximately $900.00 for the program. Tuition is paid per semester, for a total of four semesters. Financial aid is not available. The Practical Nursing Program, however, is approved for payment of Veteran’s Affairs benefits. APPLICATION PROCEDURES Complete the application form. There is a $60 application and testing fee due when your packet is submitted on your selected test date. Only cash or a money order, payable to CCST, can be accepted. Obtain 3 sealed, professional references (employers, teachers). The reference form is available on this web site. Obtain an official high school transcript (Do not open the sealed envelope) or provide a copy of your GED certificate. If you have taken college classes, obtain official transcripts from your college. Register for the Teas V test by sending an email to Kathy.jones@cpschools.com . Please state the date you desire to test. Only 20 applicants can be accommodated on each test date. You will receive an email confirming your date. TEAS V preparation resources are available at http://www.atitesting.com/ati_store/, but are not required for purchase. TESTING DATES The TEAS V will be administered on February 19 and March 17 at 12:30 p.m. in the computer lab at CCST. TESTING PROCEDURES Applicants should plan to arrive at CCST at least fifteen minutes prior to testing time. Please bring your completed application packet (application, transcripts, 3 professional references), application fee, picture identification, and a pen or pencil. You may also bring a snack to eat during a planned 10-minute break. The testing period should last approximately four (4) hours to complete the TEAS V test. Test scores will be available for each applicant at the conclusion of the test. However, no single score indicates that you have met all of the criteria for acceptance into our nursing program. INFORMATION MEETING Faculty will review application packets and test scores and notify qualified applicants concerning a mandatory information meeting. During this meeting you will be able to ask, as well as receive, pertinent program information. The Admissions Committee will only consider application packets and test scores of persons who attend this meeting. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION OF NURSING STUDENTS Complete application Writing sample Satisfactory scores on the TEAS V Official transcript to verify high school graduation or GED certificate Official transcripts from post-secondary institutions, if applicable Three satisfactory professional references Attend information meeting ESSENTIAL ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES OF NURSING STUDENTS The student nurse should demonstrate the following abilities and attributes, with or without accommodations: Stand and maintain balance for sustained periods. Move within a confined space. Move quickly. Pick up objects with hands: grasping small objects; squeeze with fingers. Push, pull or lift up to 25 pounds. Communicate information through writing. Use computer-based programs, internet, word processing programs, email, and presentation programs, such as PowerPoint.
