Announces 2011 Alumni Award Winners
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Warren P. Williamson, Jr. College of Business Administration
(WCBA) at Youngstown State University announces the recipients of 2011 WCBA Outstanding
Alumnus Awards: William Hartwig, BSBA ‘77, vice president for supplier relations and
international procurement department of the Marriott Corporation (retired), Outstanding Business
Alumnus; Karen Conklin, BSBA ‘70, executive director, American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley,
Outstanding Business Alumna; The Honorable Theresa Dellick, BSBA ‘80, Mahoning County Court of
Common Pleas-Juvenile Division, Outstanding Business Alumna; Lorilyn Shandor, BSBA ’05 and MBA
‘09, prospect/event administrator, Humility of Mary Health Partners Foundation, Outstanding Recent
Alumna. The recipients will be honored at the 16th Annual WCBA Alumni Banquet at 5:30 p.m. on
Friday, October 28, 2011 in Williamson Hall at 221 North Hazel Street.
The Outstanding Business Alumnus Award will be presented to William Hartwig who
recently retired as vice president, global supplier relations and international procurement for
Marriott International, Inc. In this role, he provided strategic direction and executive management
to Marriott’s procurement function worldwide. He led the relationship between Marriott and
Avendra (Marriott’s key contracted centralized procurement supplier) in North America and
developed procurement business opportunities for Marriott around the world.
Mr. Hartwig joined Marriott in 1985 and has held several positions within the company’s
lodging brands and businesses. Most recently, he was general manager of the Shenyang Marriott
in Shenyang, China. As general manager of the first Marriott-branded hotel in China, the hotel
gained official five-star tourism status and became a leader in its market. Prior to his post in
China, he served as vice president and general manager of HomeSolutions by Marriott, general
manager of the Downers Grove Marriott Suites in Illinois and market director for Courtyard by
Marriott and Fairfield Inn brands.
While at Marriott, Mr. Hartwig assisted YSU faculty with international study tours to
China. He also visited the YSU campus as a Williamson Symposium Speaker.
Karen Conklin, executive director of the American Red Cross, will be recognized as
outstanding business alumna. Mrs. Conklin is responsible for assisting with the merger of the Red
Cross of Mahoning County with the Red Cross of Trumbull County. Her efforts to merge
volunteers from the two counties into a cohesive working unit were also successful. Prior to the
Red Cross, she served as executive director for the Humane Society of Greater Akron where she
managed the construction and move to a new state-of-the-art facility.
Previously, Mrs. Conklin was the chief executive officer for the Girl Scouts Lake to River
Council in Niles for fifteen years where she provided leadership, vision, and strategic direction for
a four-county Girl Scout Council. During her tenure Conklin attained the highest girl and adult
membership in council history. Before joining the Girl Scouts Mrs. Conklin was the director of
development for The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown and for the Public
Television Stations Channels 45/49.
Also quite active in the community, Mrs. Conklin serves as a board member to YSU’s
Alumni Board and YSU’s Nonprofit Leadership Council. She is the treasurer for the Steel Valley
Wrestling Officials and the only female high school wrestling official in the state of Ohio. Mrs.
Conklin is also a member of Leadership Mahoning Valley, the Emergency Management Agency,
and the Food Coalition.
Mrs. Conklin received many awards including the Summit County MRDD Employer
Award, Warren Tribune Chronicle Woman of Influence, JC Penney Spirit of the American
Woman, YWCA Woman of the Year and an Athena Award nominee.
The Honorable Theresa Dellick will also be named as an outstanding business alumna.
Judge Dellick became a County Court judge in 1999. In 2001, she was appointed Juvenile Court
Judge. She graduated from Youngstown State University in 1980, and in 1984, she received her
Juris Doctor from the University Of Toledo College Of Law.
Before becoming a judge she was a civil defense trial lawyer and partner with a
Youngstown firm. Judge Dellick is President of the Ohio Association of Juvenile Court Judges.
She has been a presenter at national and state conferences. She is a member of the Ohio Supreme
Court’s Commission on the Rules of Superintendence, Specialized Dockets Advisory Committee,
the Ohio Attorney General’s Violent Crimes with Guns Advisory Group-Gang-Subcommittee,
Ohio Judicial Conference, Juvenile Law and Procedure Committee and the Judicial Assistance
Group. Judge Dellick is also a member of Phi Kappa Phi and is active on several community
boards.
Judge Dellick maintains the court’s success is due to the staff’s commitment and
dedication to serving the community’s children and families. She has taken an active role in
building collaborations between juvenile court and the community. She also started the
Mahoning County High School for expelled students; many who have successfully graduated from
high school and are pursuing post secondary education degrees. She is a supporter of early
prevention and directs programming in furtherance of that goal. The efforts of Judge Dellick and
the Court staff have significantly decreased delinquency filings at the court. She has received
numerous awards recognizing the accomplishments.
Lorilyn Shandor, prospect and event administrator for the Humility of Mary Health
Partners Foundation, will be honored as the Outstanding Recent Alumna. She organizes all
foundation events and is responsible for annual giving. Miss Shandor worked with Covelli
Enterprises to coordinate and implement Panerathon generating over $305,000 in funding with
more than 7,000 people in attendance in the first two years. Miss Shandor also implemented the
first Doctor’s Day recognition and giving program generating over 150 new donors.
Prior to HMHP Foundation, Miss Shandor was the fund development and communications
coordinator for the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio. Her efforts to research potential foundation
and individual funders for operational and program funding contributed to her efforts to organize
“Uncorked”, an annual wine tasting and dessert competition event that continued to grow each of
the four years it was held. She was also responsible for organizing an all-day event at Youngstown
State University with attendance of more than 200 seventh and eighth grade girls and their
mothers covering bullying and obesity for the Girl Scouts of Lake to River Council in 2007. Miss
Shandor was also employed as a resource assistant with the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United
Way working to achieve their annual fundraising goal.
Her professional memberships include Leadership Mahoning Valley 2010, secretary of
Mahoning Valley Young Professionals Board of Trustees, and vice president of communications
for the board at the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Mahoning and Shenango Chapter.
She has been a valued speaker/volunteer for YSU’s American Humanics and Business 2020.
