Computer Battery – powers the clock (date/time) BIOS – Basic Input/Output System that transfers program instructions to hardware components Computer Clock – an internal timing device that regulates how fast data is transmitted inside a computer OR calculates the date and time in a computer CMOS – Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor, the chips located on the motherboard which help control it. CPU – Central Processing Unit, the ‘brain’ of the computer which processes all the instructions and most calculations Expansion Slots – card slots inside a computer for devices such as modems, sound cards, hard drive controllers, etc. Floppy Disk – a thin plastic disk of magnetic media used for storing small amounts of data Floppy Drive – a device used to read data stored on floppy disks CD ROM – a device used to read data from Compact Disks, places of permanent memory storage Hard Drive – a device that stores data on metal platters coated with magnetic media Ports – the physical or software interface between your computer and an external device through which data passes Power Supply – supplies the computer with electricity RAM – Random Access Memory, the temporary place where programs are loaded during execution and where calculations are performed ROM – Read Only Memory, stores data which cannot altered such as the BIOS Video Card – used to transfer data to the monitor so that it can be displayed. 16. Modem – enables the computer to transmit data over cable or telephone lines 17. Input Device – a component that brings information into a computer 18. Output Device – a component that takes information out of a computer to the user Each correctly identified term is worth 1/2 mark. Out of 8 marks Computer Hardware Assignment 1B Pick one of these topics: 1. 2. 3. Input Devices Output Devices Internal Hardware Discuss (in paragraphs or point form) any one of the three topics above, discussing several devices or components (minimum 2), including the cost, purpose, and current uses of the technology. This is to be more of an overview than an in-depth assignment. Out of 8 marks Assignment 13 Total: /40 Part 1 Motherboard Anatomy 1. PCI (expansion slots) 2. BIOS chip 3. Ports 4. AGP port 5.
