Greetings! It’s been a very good year for this 21-year-old. The College of Fellows is more active than ever,
developing new initiatives and continuing its strong tradition of service in the cause of advancing excellence
and integrity in our profession and within PRSA. This final report for 2010 offers you a summary of this year’s
highlights, along with a brief look ahead at 2011.
Beginning with the future, it is my pleasure to announce the leaders who will be guiding the College of
Fellows through its 22nd year. Congratulations to the following Fellows who have been elected to office
through a vote of the entire College. We are truly honored to have such talented and committed members
willing to step forward in service. They are:

Chair:
Fred Bagg, APR, Fellow PRSA, director, strategic planning and research, St. Francis Hospital &
Health Center, Beach Grove, Ind.

Chair-Elect:
Mary Deming Barber, APR, Fellow PRSA, The Barber Group, Inc., Anchorage, Alaska

Vice-Chair:
Maria P. Russell, APR, Fellow PRSA, professor, public relations department and director, executive
education programs, Syracuse University, Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse,
N.Y

Secretary & Treasurer:
Anthony D’Angelo, APR, Fellow PRSA, director, operations, St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Care
Foundation, Syracuse, N.Y.
As immediate past chair, I also serve on the PRSA College of Fellows Executive Committee for 2011.
The charge of the College of Fellows is to provide leadership and service to PRSA and the profession,
setting the highest standards for ethics, excellence and service. Here’s a look at some of the ways we have
been working to serve you, PRSA as a whole and the profession.
Mentoring: Tradition and Innovation
The College has a history of leadership for PRSA in the area of mentoring, and a key focus this year has
been expanding our mentorship role. To that end, we are ready to launch the pilot program for a new
initiative in January — the College of Fellows/New Professionals Section Mentoring Program.
Tom Gable, APR, Fellow PRSA, has been spearheading this effort, ably assisted by Rick Batyko, APR,
Fellow PRSA; Ray Crockett, APR, Fellow PRSA; Lynne Friedman, APR, Fellow PRSA; Bruce Harrison,
APR, Fellow PRSA; and Sandra Longcrier, APR, Fellow PRSA. They have worked closely with Janet
Krenn, chair, and Crystal Olig, co-chair, of the PRSA New Professionals Section.
Many thanks to the Fellows who participated in our October survey designed to ascertain interest in and
gather ideas for this program. We had an almost 25-percent participation rate and a highly-positive
response. The program seeks to create a new model for mentoring that will meet member needs, as well as
establish new standards, procedures and measures of success that will become a model for all PRSA
mentoring.
Right now, we hope to secure at least 50 active members of the College for the program by March. At the
same time, New Professionals has also surveyed its members and is setting up a process for enrolling
mentees. Watch for more reports as the program develops in 2011, with a full launch anticipated by January
2012.
Meanwhile, Margaret Ann Hennen, APR, Fellow PRSA, led a successful on-site mentoring program at the
Conference; thank you to all of those Fellows who volunteered their time for this annual and popular activity.
We continue to provide career counseling through our online mentoring program. To get involved, just
contact Heather Ritchey. “Ask the Experts” is a Fellows program that was introduced last year and is
offered through the PRSA Jobcenter. Currently, eight Fellows are actively involved in this “speed
mentoring” program. For details and to sign up, contact Richard Spector.
Education Initiative
With many Fellows expressing interest in full or part-time teaching, the Education Initiative this year looked at
ways to utilize and adapt the Learning to Teach (LTT) model developed by the Educators Academy to the
needs of Fellows. Bob “Pritch” Pritchard, APR, Fellow PRSA, has headed up a working group that
includes Kirk Hazlitt, APR, Fellow PRSA, and Ron Rhody, APR, Fellow PRSA.
The sizable and enthusiastic audience that attended the College’s session titled, “More PR Students, not
Enough Faculty: Learn How to Translate Your PR Experience to the Classroom,” at the PRSA 2010
International Conference showed strong interest in regional Learning to Teach programs. Moving forward,
we will explore setting up programs in the coming year in conjunction with District conferences and continue
to strengthen our partnerships with the PRSA Educators Academy and Educational Affairs Committee.
Fellows at the PRSA 2010 International Conference
Fellows played a prominent role throughout the conference. More than 150 Fellows and their guests enjoyed
a festive evening, welcoming 14 new members to the College at the induction dinner at the Mayflower
Renaissance Hotel. Fellows Vice-Chair Mary Deming Barber, APR, Fellow PRSA, and her committee
raised $10,000 in sponsorship dollars, enabling us to cover the cost of the event for each new Fellow. This
allowed the College of Fellows to make a profit off the event — a critical element in keeping the College in
the black (see Financial Report below).
Once again, the annual “College of Fellows 101: Demystifying the Application” drew strong participation
— and has already resulted in requests for applications for 2011. The Fellows master class “Ethics and
Today’s New World of Communications: An Interactive Look at What’s Right, Wrong, and Just
Depends,” which also featured a live Twitter feed, attracted a standing-room-only crowd, and almost 100
people Tweeting about the chat and submitting questions to the panelists. The program was such a success
that we are working with the Health Academy to present a similar healthcare-oriented session at its April
conference.
Meanwhile, congratulations to these Fellows who were honored by PRSA at the conference:
 Atlas Award Winner:
John Paluszek, APR, Fellow PRSA
 Patrick Jackson Award for Distinguished Service to PRSA:
Ferne Bonomi, APR, Fellow PRSA
 Outstanding Educator:
Kirk Hallahan, APR, Fellow PRSA
 Jackson, Jackson & Wagner Behavioral Sciences Prize:
Jack Felton, APR, Fellow PRSA
 Gold Anvil Award Recipient:
Judy Phair, APR, Fellow PRSA
New Report on Philanthropy in PR Education
Dr. Kathleen Kelley, APR, Fellow PRSA, is the author of a new research report released by the
Commission on Public Relations Education, titled, “Philanthropy for Public Relations: 2020 Followup Study.” While noting that philanthropy for public relations education is still “in early stages,” the report
found that total support has reached about $15 million. Most contributions support undergraduate
scholarships. The full report can be downloaded at CommPred.org. The study was funded by the Plank
Center for Leadership in Public Relations at the University of Alabama and the PRSA Foundation.
Financial Report
The success of the annual Induction Dinner should enable the College to end the year in a good financial
position, although final numbers will not be available until early in 2011. We urge those Fellows who have not
yet paid their $20 dues for 2010 to do so as quickly as possible. While we receive some support from PRSA,
we are also assessed for Web services, staff support and the like. Our dues are not high, but they do make a
difference, and payment of dues is a requirement for a Fellow to be considered in good standing.
Future Fellows
Do you know members who would be good candidates for membership in the College? We need your help in
identifying future Fellows who will help the College continue to grow as a strong, vibrant part of PRSA. The
highly-regarded GoodFellows Program, headed this year by Vivian Hamilton, APR, Fellow PRSA; Joan
Capelin, APR, Fellow PRSA; and Deborah Radman, APR, Fellow PRSA, gives valuable counsel and
support to candidates who request this assistance.
In Memoriam
We lost three of our wonderful colleagues and Fellows this year. They were remembered during the
Induction dinner and at our annual business meeting.

Looking Ahead — Strategically
Finally, I want to thank the hard-working, dedicated and talented members of this year’s executive
committee: Fred Bagg, APR, Fellow PRSA, chair-elect; Mary Deming Barber, APR, Fellow PRSA, vicechair; Maria P. Russell, APR, Fellow PRSA, secretary-treasurer; and Michael Herman, APR, Fellow
PRSA, immediate past chair; along with BJ Whitman, APR, Fellow PRSA, our PRSA Board liaison.
A sincere thank you, as well, to our committee and task force chairs: Tom Gable, APR, Fellow PRSA, New
Mentoring Initiative; Margaret Ann Hennen, APR, Fellow PRSA, On-site Mentoring; Deanna Pelfrey, APR,
Fellow PRSA, Glossary of PR Terms; Bob “Pritch” Pritchard, APR, Fellow PRSA, Education; and the
GoodFellows triumvirate: Joan Capelin, APR, Fellow PRSA; Vivian Hamilton, APR, Fellow PRSA; and
Deb Radman, APR, Fellow PRSA. Joan and Vivian have been the Godmothers of GoodFellows, and they
are stepping down after this year. Our debt to them for extraordinary service is beyond measure. And, of
course, eternal gratitude goes to Heather Ritchey, our PRSA staff liaison.
It has been my great joy and honor to have the opportunity to serve you and, with you, I hope, to have
helped advance the role of the College of Fellows within PRSA and in making a difference for our profession.
It has been especially rewarding to see the continued and increasing involvement of so many Fellows in
mentorship programs, committee and task force service, and numerous other ways. “Thank you” is a phrase
that can never be overused — we thank you.
I’m excited about Fred’s plans for the coming year — including the creation of a strategic plan for the
College. We have just convened task forces to work on a review of the nominating policies and procedures
for Fellows officers, with an eye to further improving and streamlining the process, and to look at our Fellows’
definition of ethical conduct, especially in the world of social media.
We encourage your involvement and your thoughts — please contact me or any other member of the
Executive Committee.
Best wishes for a joyous holiday season
Sincerely,
Judith T. Phair, APR, Fellow PRSA
2010 Chair, College of Fellows
