This novel is about an Indian girl, Mary, living in a rich family. She was a girl who
never thinks of other people, but only of herself. She was also a very selfish ,
disagreeable, bad-tempered child. The other day, her parents die because of a
terrible disease, and then she was sent to England to live with her uncle in a big,
lonely, and gloomy house. There are many rooms and gardens there. On the first day
in her uncle house, when she wakes up, she sees a servant cleaning the floor. She has
a bad tempered to the servant, Martha. Mary is so spoiled that she even could not
dress by herself. But in Yorkshire, she has to learn to dress herself. Dickon, Martha’s
brother, who is always out on the moor, is Mary’s friend. Colin, who is a boy with bad
health, is Mary’s cousin. One day, when she is walking in the garden and watching
the robin flying around, she find the old, buried key which is to the secret garden.
She put the key safely in her pocket. After several days, she talked this secret to her
friends, Dickon and Colin. They borrow some tools and enter the secret garden
secretly. Afterwards, they work in the garden. Finally, after their hard work, the
garden is alive again. This also makes her uncle walk out of his sorrow. And the smile
appears on his face again. Finally, they have a wonderful life in the end.
After reading this novel, I think that Mary is a good girl, although she is very selfish
and conceited in the beginning. But she has opened her mind and changes herself
when she lives in Yorkshire. She begins to treat everyone friendly and takes care of
everything. She has learned many things first time there. She dresses herself for the
first time and so does she make friends and work in the garden. She spends time
running on the moor and working in the garden, she has never had this good mood
before. She loves this comfortable feeling very much.
This story tells us that environment is very important for children’s behavior. If the
child lives in a rich family which has servant to do everything, the child may have bad
temper and prompt everybody to do the things for him or her. And if the child lives in
a family that he or she has to be in charge of many things, he may become
independent. That’s how important the environment is!
And we also learn that when we face something new or confront our weaknesses, we
must open our minds to accept others’ suggestions and learn something new. This
attitude will make us broaden our horizons and makes us to succeed easily. In the
future, we may do things with this attitude, and it will benefit us very well. And I also
learn that money is not good at all. In spite of earning a lot of money, it cannot make
the dead lover alive again. So, what we can do is make best use of our time and
treasure the people around us!
