SAS News Release: 2nd July 2013 Brighton Beach Clean Record Attempt As part of their growing activities to tackle marine litter, this July Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) will be attempting to organise a record-breaking beach clean event involving up to 500 community volunteers. This inspiring action will take place during Brighton’s popular watersports festival, Paddle Round the Pier, on Saturday 6 th July at 2pm. SAS is looking to top their 2012 record of 257 volunteers so make sure you turn up to be part of a new UK record protecting Brighton’s much loved beach. To take part please join the SAS Team on the beach under the SAS flags on the beach in front of the Lawns Cafe at 2pm. Beach clean volunteers will be tasked with removing 10 items of marine litter each, meaning that we will remove over 5000 items of harmful marine litter from Brighton’s coast in a matter of minutes. With up to 50,000 beach lovers enjoying Paddle Round The Pier this is a fantastic opportunity to protect the coastal environment. SAS’S Brighton Beach Clean on the 6th of July at Paddle Round The Pier will be the 10th event of the SAS Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project, which is running throughout the spring and summer at 14 beaches and rivers across the UK. Join SAS on Saturday the 6th of July under the Surfers Against Sewage flags on the beach in front of the Lawns Cafe at 2pm. Volunteers will receive all the safety equipment they require and also learn more about SAS’s year round environmental projects and end the day with a celebratory glass of Barefoot Wine and free Beach Rescue Project T-shirt. If you’d like to sign up before the event please visit the SAS tent in the Paddle Round The Pier traders village or email Dom Ferris at dom@sas.org.uk. SAS Campaign Officer, Dom Ferris says: “Setting the record in 2012 was fantastic the fact that 257 people helped us clean their beach in pouring rain was really inspiring. The chance to break last year’s record is truly exciting and with the help of 500 people at Brighton and some luck with the weather on the 6th of July we’ll do that in style!” [ENDS] Notes to Editors Marine Litter There are almost 2,000 items of marine litter for every km of the UK’s beaches One of the most prevalent items of marine litter are cigarette butts (especially in popular tourist destinations such as Brighton).
