Because these parts have related sections in 640 and 680, review of these changes were postponed until this meeting. The proposed changes to clothing, eating, and drinking are based upon the changes given in EPC Exhibit 130-26. 391.1-391.4 Costume The term “Costume” can refer to wardrobe and dress in general, or to the distinctive style of dress of a particular people, class, or period. The term “Costumes” refers to the type of costume that is worn for special purposes, e.g., by actors during a play, by merrymakers during Halloween. At 391, 391.01-391.04, 391.1–391.3, 391.1, 391.2, and 391.3, “costumes” instead of “costume” is used. We have changed all instances of “costumes” to “costume” at these numbers. Costume of men, women, and children have their numbers at 391.1, 391.2, and 391.3, respectively. These numbers are displaced from their Table 1—08 location by the following entry: 391[.008 1–.008 4] Sex and age groups Do not use; class in 391.1–391.3 Both 391.0083 and 391.0084 are restored since groups of people, such as youth and young adults, are not provided for at 391.1-391.3. The new provisions are similar to those at 646.40081-646.40084. Non-auxiliary garments have specific numbers at 646.43-.47 and 687.1, and need specific numbers here in 391. The following gives the caption with each 646.4 and 687.14 number as given in Edition 22 or as modified in EPC Exhibit 130-26. Specific kinds of garments 646.43 687.11 Not provided for elsewhere Dresses 646.432 687.112 Suits, jackets, trousers 646.433 687.113 Shirts, blouses, tops 646.435 687.114 Skirts 646.437 687.117 Outerwear 646.45 687.14 Sweaters 646.454 687.146 Uniforms and symbolic garments 646.47 687.15 (Part of 687.16) Garments for special purposes 646.47 687.16 Including athletic garments, evening and formal dress, maternity garments, wedding clothes Costumes 646.478 687.16 Except for the non-parallel numbers, the arrangement of the garments is the same at both locations. Thus, the new development at 391 should use the same general arrangement. Because the only two vacant numbers, 391.8 and 391.9, are separated from 391.4 2 Auxiliary garments and accessories, the new development will be under 391.4, whose heading is changed to Garments and accessories. The above developments have three units; thus, the proposed development will use the current vacant 391.46-391.48. Because 391.41-391.45 are currently auxiliary garment and accessories and because topics-not-provided-for-elsewhere usually comes last, the “Specific kinds of garments” unit will come after the “Outerwear” unit. A classelsewhere note will be added to indicate that “Garments for specific purposes” takes preference over “Specific kinds of garments” and “Outerwear.” The changes at 391.1-391.3 were approved as part of EPC exhibit 128-24.1; however, the change in wording of “Outer coats, sweaters, wraps” to “Outerwear” at 391.46 also requires a change of wording here at 391.1-391.3. Currently, there is a class-elsewhere note at 391.1-391.3 Costume of specific ages and sexes to 391.4 for auxiliary garment and accessories. New relocation notes from the 391.1-391.3 entries to the new 391.46-391.48 entries parallel this class-elsewhere note. At 391.42, “sleepwear” replaced “nightclothes” in the heading, and “nightclothes” is shown as a varant name for “sleepwear.” These changes are similar to 646.42 Sleepwear and underwear in EPC Exhibit 130-26 640. 391 Costume and personal appearance Standard subdivisions are added for costume and personal appearance together, for costume alone Class here interdisciplinary works on costume, clothing, fashion Class costumes costume and clothing associated with a specific occasion with the occasion in 392–394, e.g., wedding apparel 392.54 For fashion design, see 746.92. At that time, food and meals were relocated from 392.37 to 394.1, but at the same time 394.12 Eating and drinking was introduced. We believe that the relocation should have been to 394.12, not to 394.1. Thus, we propose to move “Class here food” to 394.12, and meals to 394.125. At 394.125, we have provided specific entries for various types of meals. The development is similar to that at 641.52-641.54 Cooking specific meals in EPC Exhibit 130-26. At first glance, it would seem as if meals should be moved to 394.15 Specific meals, and the proposed development for various types of meals should be there. There are 161 titles in WorldCat at 394.15; however, 113 of those titles are limited to the customs of tea, especially the Japanese tea ceremony. Thus, to avoid a major shift of material, we propose to leave customs of tea at 394.15 and to relocate specific meals to 395.125. In 7 addition, a see-also reference from 395.15 to 395.1253 for afternoon tea, a type of meal, is provided. One could ask why not relocate 394.16 Use of drugs, which is awkwardly located in the 394.1 development, to another location and move “Eating and drinking” from 394.12 to 394.1. There are 641 titles in WorldCat classed at 391.14. Also, “Use of drugs” would be just as awkward in any of the other developments of 394. Thus, we do not propose any changes for 394.14 Use of drugs. 392.37 Cooking Class comprehensive works on food and meals in 394.12 394.1 Eating, drinking; using drugs Situations and methods of use, prohibited uses Class here food and meals For cooking, see 392.37 394.12 Eating and drinking Class here food Class eating and drinking customs of a specific meal in 394.15; class food taboos in 394.16 table manners in 395.54 For cooking, see 392.37; for drinking of alcoholic beverages, see 394.13; for customs of tea, see 394.15; for foor taboos, see 394.16 394.125 394.125 2 Meals First meal of the day [formerly 394.15] Class here breakfasts 394.125 25 Brunches [formerly 394.15] 8 394.125 3 Light meals [formerly 394.15] and snacks Standard subdivisions are added for light meals and snacks together; for light meals alone Class here lunches, suppers, teas as light meals Class breakfasts in 394.1252; class lunches, suppers, teas as main meals in 394.125 4 394.125 36 Afternoon teas [formerly 394.15] See also 394.15 for Japanese tea ceremony 394.125 39 Snacks [formerly 394.15] 394.125 4 Main meal of the day [formerly 394.15] Class here dinners; lunches, suppers, teas as main meals Class breakfasts in 394.1252; class lunches, suppers, teas as light meals in 394.1253 394.13 Drinking of alcoholic beverages 394.14 Use of drugs Including marijuana, narcotics, tobacco For alcoholic beverages, see 394.13 394.15 Specific meals Customs of tea Class here Japanese tea ceremony First meal of the day relocated to 394.1252; brunches relocated to 394.12525; light meals relocated to 394.1253; afternoon teas relocated to 394.12536; snacks relocated to 394.12539; main meal of the day relocated to 394.1254 See also 394.12536 for teas as a type of meal 394[.150 1–.150 9] Standard subdivisions Do not use; class in 394.101–394.109 9 394.16 Food taboos 10
