The student will be introduced to common procedures, materials, and equipment used in basic dental procedures. Sterilization, infection control, legalities, and responsibilities of a dental assistant are included in this course. Pre-requisites & Other requirements: Acceptance in the Dental Assisting Program Enrolled in DENA 101 Current CPR certification Current immunizations and Hepatitis vaccine Current health insurance Required Textbooks and Supplies: All texts used in DENA 101 Barrier Kit Royal blue scrub pant & print jacket (See Dental Assisting Program Student Handbook) Goals: 1. Identify basic dental procedures and the instruments, materials, and equipment used with each procedure. 2. Demonstrate personal protection, infection control, and disinfection and sterilization techniques. 3. Interpret charted dental conditions and chart conditions using appropriate charting symbols, abbreviations and codes on an anatomic and geographic diagrams. Objectives: Upon the completion of this course the student will: 1. Demonstrate applying disclosing solution, tooth brushing and flossing techniques, and fluoride application. 2. Demonstrate proper hand washing and donning of personal protective equipment. 3. Prepare the treatment room and seat a dental patient. 4. Dismiss a dental patient, clean and disinfect the treatment room. 5. Demonstrate the treatment of contaminated trays in the sterilization area. 6. Prepare a patient health history and take & record patient vital signs. 7. Demonstrate the administration of oxygen is an emergency situation. 8. Demonstrate the exchange of dental instruments using the one-handed and the two-handed transfers in a safe and efficient manner. 9. Demonstrate tip placement for oral evacuation and use of the three-way syringe. 10. Place a rubber dam. 11. Prepare an anesthetic syringe. 12. Assist with the administration of topical and local anesthetics. 13. Complete tray set-ups for specific procedures. 14. Assemble and place a matrix band and retainer. 15. Record the charting of an oral examination. Outcomes Assessment: Competency sheets that are provided in the Workbook to Accompany Torres and Ehrlich Modern Dental Assisting, Eighth Edition, are used to evaluate the student. The student, a peer, and the instructor all use the same sheet to evaluate the procedure performed. The student is given two attempts to receive a passing score of eighty percent or above. Attendance: Attendance is not an option; it is mandatory and is used as a portion of the final grade. Completion of the skills covered in the lab is part of the requirements to successfully pass. If a class period is missed the skills learned and evaluated must be made up with the instructor during a time other than the normally scheduled lab time. Failure to complete the skills within the specified time frame will result in an “unsatisfactory” lab grade and dismissal from the program. With permission of the instructor students may attend additional lab classes or switch lab days. Assignments: Most assignments will be done as a part of the class lab, however various outside assignments will be given, as the instructor deems necessary. All assignments are due at the next scheduled class period, unless otherwise specified. If an assignment is late and an extension has not been issued, 10% of the total points will be deducted each day up to the 5th day. No credit will be given after 5 days, however the assignment must still be completed and turned in to meet class requirements. Examinations: The only examination given will be the final lab assessment the last two weeks of the semester. The final exam must be passed with an 80% or above to continue in the Dental Assisting Program. Grading Scale: The skills laboratory accounts for 35% of the total grade received in DENA 101. Attendance, competency sheet scores and the final exam are used to determine the grade received. The final exam must be passed with an 80% or above to continue in the Dental Assisting Program.
