Talking Walls – Day 1
Objective
After a read aloud, students will learn about the purposes and uses of
walls in the world. Using the Internet, students will also gather important
information about the Great Wall on China. (PA Standards 7.1.3, 1.2.3)
Materials

Procedure
1. Begin the lesson by asking students to draw a wall on a piece of white
drawing paper. It can be a wall that they know about or a made-up
wall. They will have five minutes to complete this activity.
2. Bring the students over to the carpet and in a circle, ask each student
to quickly describe their wall and what the purpose of their wall is.
3. When all students have finished sharing, tell students they will be
learning about several walls in the world for the next couple of weeks.
4. Read to students Walls. When finished reading, ask students to tell
you a few things walls are used for described in the book. Then ask
students to think of other purposes of walls in our world.
5. After a few responses, introduce students to Talking Walls. Briefly
take a picture walk of the book and stop at The Great Wall of China.
Read to the class the section about the Great Wall.
6. Tell students that they will now be completing a scavenger hunt online.
Each student will be given a worksheet with several questions that will
be answered using the website above.
7. As students are finishing, instruct them to search on the Internet for
other website about the Great Wall and try to find other interesting
facts about the Great Wall.
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated based on teacher observations of
understanding during the discussion on the carpet. Students will also be
evaluated on their correctness and completion of the scavenger hunt worksheet.
