Columbus ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Columbus ? At the 1973 Youngstown State Convention, Ohio began holding biennial state conventions in the years between national conventions. Previously, state conventions were held in the same year as national conventions. (2) Michael James Coogan of Dayton subsequently served as AOH National President from 1988 to 1990. Martin L. Sweeney, Esq. of Cleveland also served as AOH National President from 1927 to 1931. In addition, Thomas J. Dundon of Columbus served as AOH National Treasurer from 1890 to 1898. (3) S.D. denotes State Delegate. Prior to 1894 the elected head of the AOH in America was referred to as the National Delegate. Theoretically he represented the American AOH in Ireland at the national conventions held there of all the AOH jurisdictions in the world. In 1894 the AOH in America severed its administrative ties to the AOH in Ireland and our national leader assumed the title President. Following the precedent of the AOH national Board the title President was likewise adopted by the state jurisdictions. (4) The 1882 AOH National Convention in Chicago established the current format of biennial national and state conventions. Previous national and state conventions were held annually. According to John Ridge: “Although a St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 1873 in the city of Akron is the site of the first recorded public appearance of a division of Hibernians in Ohio, the origin of the division can be traced to 1867 in South Akron when it was organized with 20 members by Michael McFarland, a county Leitrim native, who first joined the Order in Ireland in 1850. This may very well have been Ohio’s first division.” See John T. Ridge, Erin’s Sons in America: The Ancient Order of Hibernians (Brooklyn AOH Publications) 1986, p. 93. 2 Produced by: Gerry Curran – A.O.H.
