Today’s Plan:
1.Welcome! Student Info Sheet
1. Collect Summer Work:
 Essay #1 Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck: Social Issues
Many works of literature deal with political or social issues. For your second essay, analyze how a
character, when alienated because of gender, race, class or creed, reveals the surrounding society’s
assumptions and moral issues.
 Essay #2: “For That He Looked Not upon Her,” George Gascoigne
2. Cultural Literacy Icebreaker: What is cultural literacy? What should a culturally literate person know?
3. Discuss Course: Our Exam is Wed., May 6th, 2015. The exam consists of 55 MC questions and three
essays (one poetry, one prose, one open response).
 Weekly Vocabulary Quizzes (check website—we will begin next week)
 Multiple-Choice (MC) Section next block (review literary terms—we will take a brief quiz today to
see where you are….)
 Discuss homework (see below)
5. AP Lit Exam Quiz (this quiz is not for a grade—let’s just see how much you know about the exam…) 
6. Literary Terminology Quiz (this is for a grade)
7. Of Mice and Men Chapter Presentations: you will have a bit of time in your groups next block—
presentations are Friday, Sept. 12—be ready!

 Buy class materials (see syllabus: binder, two-pocket folder, pens/pencils/highlighters, post-its, index
cards—bring all materials to class, please!)
 Please be sure you have your review book by next week
 Read / Sign Syllabus (this will be collected next block)
 There is a MC section next block—please review the literary terms
 Of Mice and Men Chapter Presentations (each student should complete the handout; presentations for
each chapter are Friday., Sept. 12—be ready!)
Mon., Sept. 8th:
1. Hand in Syllabus Signatures
2. Return Literary Terminology Quiz (make index cards for any unfamiliar terms and bring the cards to
class each day )
3. Today we will have a full-length MC section (see homework, on back….)
Homework:
 Study Vocab. List 1—our first vocabulary quiz is on Friday.
 Chapter presentations from Of Mice and Men are also Friday—be ready
Wed., Sept. 10th:
1. Syllabus Signature—did you hand it in?
2. Discuss the results of the MC section
3. Discuss Essays:
 Essay 1: Of Mice and Men
 Essay 2: “For That He Looked Not upon Her,” George Gascoigne
4. Prepare for Of Mice and Men presentations
Homework:

 Rewrite both essays—we will peer-critique them next block
