Identifying Conflicts of Interest SAGES has implemented the following approach towards identifying potential conflicts of interest. 1. Members of committees involved in the planning of Journal Club CME activities must provide a financial disclosure. These disclosures are sent to the CME committee in advance of each committee meeting. Attendees are reminded about the disclosure policy at each committee meeting, and any committee member with a conflict is asked to recuse him or herself from the discussion of any CME activities. 2. In accordance with submission policies to Surgical Endoscopy, article authors must provide their financial disclosures along with their article for review by the Surgical Endoscopy Editor. The Editor then determines whether or not a potential conflict exists and makes suggested edits or changes. 3. The Journal Club Task Force Chair will choose and review the assigned article. 4. Questions/answers developed by task force members are subject to a review by the Journal Club Task Force Chair along with their disclosures. 5. All financial disclosures are displayed in the CME Accreditation Information sheet located in the activity course website within SAGES University. B. Managing Potential Conflicts of Interest Should a conflict be identified, SAGES has implemented several mechanisms to manage conflicts of interest prior to an educational activity. 1. Self-management, such as the committee member recusing him or herself from discussion of CME activities. 2. The SAGES Conflict of Interest Task Force mandated that the Journal Club Task Force Chair review the disclosure of the task force members and their assigned articles. If the Chair were the assigned task force member, the Conflict of Interest Task Force would review the article and disclosures. The Conflict of Interest Task Force and/or Journal Club Chair will make edits to the project or task force member list if necessary. 3. The Journal Club Task Force Chair is responsible for determining whether or not a conflict exists and if so, how to manage this conflict. 4. If a conflict is determined, then a letter is sent to the Surgical Endoscopy Editor or task force member, requiring them to adhere to the management technique or the content will be replaced. 5. All attendees of CME activities are requested to make note of perceived commercial bias in activity evaluations. The Conflict of Interest Task Force and/or the CME Committee will investigate substantive concerns.
