Task CC10B: Resource File
LAE 3210 – Language Skills & Literature
FEAP Indicators: 8.02, 8.04, 10.16
Description: This file will provide a list of children’s books and resources to help elementary
teachers plan and enhance instruction.
Directions: While completing assignments in the elementary education program, you will
discover many genres and types of children’s literature to supplement your instruction as you
prepare lessons in the various subject areas. Record these books in a 3-ring binder to use as your
children’s literature resource file. Create a children’s literature design (picture/illustrations) for
the front cover and inside use tab dividers to separate each category (genre).
Categorize your findings by the following genres/book types: picture books, biographies,
historical fiction, realistic fiction, poetry, fairy tales, science fiction, informational books, chapter
books, multicultural books, mysteries.
You are to read a minimum of 10 books from each genre listed with the exception of chapter
books. [NOTATION: Chapter books must have at least 70 pages.] (Note: Only 3 chapter books
must be read, and one of those will be completed in class during Literature Circles and may
count towards your 3 book requirement.)
The following criteria should be provided about each book. Each book should have its own
separate page in the Resource Binder.
 Complete book citation. Citations should be in APA format.
 Genre type
 Evidence of genre/book type – Cite an example from each book that demonstrates
evidence the book belongs in that particular genre/book type
 Brief plot summary – no more than one or two paragraphs
 Identification of major characters and brief description
 Uses for the book with children; which ages and any curricular areas
 For the multicultural category: State whether this book has true cultural
authenticity, accuracy, and respect to the culture it is representing (ESOL
competency #15)
 Your reflection about the book – would you use this book in your classroom? If
yes, explain how you will use the book to supplement your instruction. If no,
explain why you think this book is not something you would make available to
your students.
