Those wishing to audition will be asked to sing the audition song from the show listed above, and
some may be asked to sing additional songs at the request of the Production Team. Additionally,
some may be asked to read lines from the show. Expect the entire audition process to take 1 to 2
hours, depending on various factors.
BELOW IS A LIST OF CHARACTERS:
MALE ROLES
THE CAT IN THE HAT - (Alto/Baritone), The essence of mischief, fun and imagination. The Cat stirs
things up, causes trouble, but always sets things right again.
HORTON THE ELEPHANT - (Tenor/Baritone), He is imaginative and receptive to the world around
him. He is very un-self-conscious and gentle, always believing in the good!
MAYOR OF WHOVILLE - (Baritone), A father trying hard to raise a difficult child in a difficult world.
He may get aggravated with Jojo, but he loves him dearly and tries to do the right thing, even if it turns
out to be a mistake.
GENERAL GENGUS KHAN SCHMITZ - (Alto/Baritone), The General is bursting with pride at the
military academy and the children that attend. All military, all the time!
THE WICKERSHAMS - (Mixed Ranges), These are not bad guys! They're simply a lot like kids who
tease, play pranks and get a kick out of making mischief, although often at others' expense.
FEMALE ROLES
GERTRUDE McFUZZ - (Soprano), Very self-conscious and aware that her one-feather tail isn't perfect.
MAYZIE LA BIRD - (Soprano/Mezzo), Self-centered, selfish and vain, Mayzie will never admit to her
own flaws. She manipulates anyone she can (especially Horton) into doing what she wants.
MAYOR'S WIFE - (Soprano), A mother trying hard to raise a difficult child in a difficult world. She
may get aggravated with Jojo, she loves him dearly and tries to do the right thing, even if it turns out to be
a mistake.
SOUR KANGAROO - (Mezzo Belter), She isn't really sour at all. She's just got a lot of attitude. She's
loud, brassy and a lot of fun.
THE BIRD GIRLS - (Mixed Ranges), The popular girls in any school--a clique of pretty, self-centered
"back up birds" who do whatever Mayzie does.
CHILD ROLES
JOJO - (Child Soprano/Alto), Jojo is a "Thinker" a smart child with a wild imagination. Can be a male
or female. He/she a little bit of a loner, or simply a rambunctious kid whose 'Thinks' get him/her into
constant trouble.
ADULT AND CHILD ENSEMBLE ROLES
THING 1 & 2 - Some singing/specialty movement/Tumbler, The twin mischief-makers who accompany
the Cat in the Hat.
THE WHOS - (Mixed Ranges), Ensemble Singing, They're a lot like you and me only so small as to be
invisible.
JUNGLE CREATURES - (Mixed Ranges), Ensemble Singing, Inhabitants of the Jungle of Nool
HUNCHES - (Mixed Ranges), Ensemble Singing, "Hunches" that Jojo had thought, ideas that have come
to life.
FISH - (Mixed Ranges), Ensemble Ranges, Part of McElligot's Pool
CADETS - Ensemble, Members of the Military Academy
CIRCUS MCGURKUS ANIMALS - Ensemble, Animals that are a part of the Circus McGurkus
YERTLE THE TURTLE - (Alto/Baritone), Minor Role, Strict but slightly odd judge
THE GRINCH - (Alto/Baritone), Cameo Role, The green guy with the black heart
