SCHOLARSHIP BULLETIN 2013/2014
Col. Charles E. Savedge Scholarship for Virginia Student Journalist of the Year
Criteria: graduating senior with a minimum of 2 years participant in your school’s publication
staff (yearbook, newspaper, literary magazine), demonstrated one or more qualities: leadership,
writing skills, design aptitude, creativity, organization, industry, teamwork, character, and
applying to accredited college/university.
YHS can nominate one candidate. Interested students should submit an award/activities resume
to Ms McCord to be considered as our nominee. The scholarship is for $500.

Northern Virginia Community College Rividium Inc. Biotechnology Scholarship
Eligibility: must apply, get program-placed and intend to complete the NOVA Biotechnology
program, graduating senior, demonstrated financial need, maintain GPA 3.0, submit a transcript,
letter of recommendation, and 500 essay and a list of extracurricular.

The scholarship is for $10.000. Application and supporting materials must be postmarked by the

VSGA-VIP Scholarship Foundation
Criteria: candidate plays gold or has any interest in an activity associated with golf (skill and
ability are neither requirements or considerations), academic achievement, character (activities
outside the classroom, including work, community service, school clubs, etc), an essay, and
financial need will be reviewed, and will be attending a school in the Commonwealth.
Grants range from $1,000 to $7,000. Application available at scholarships.VSGA,org

Black College Expo Scholarship Contest
The Black College Expo will be held in Bowie State University Gym on Saturday, March 8th from
9:00am to 5:00pm. Students can get scholarship and financial aid information, meet 1-on-1 with
college recruiters, application fees waived, seminars, workshops, on site acceptance.
All juniors and seniors are invited to participate in a scholarship contest by writing an essay for
500 words or less on “Why Is a College Education Important To Me?”
Essays must be double spaced and emailed to scholarship@thecollegeexpo.org and must have
your name and address, phone number, email address, name of high school and name and
number of your counselor and the Expo Market (DC/Maryland)
Winners must be present to win. Check in with registration booth by 12:00pm.

Northern Virginia Athletic Directors, Administrators and Coaches Associations (NVADACA) 2014
Scholarship Program
This scholarship program consists of six scholarships. Seniors who have participated in
interscholastic sports, cheerleading or who have served as team manager or athletic trainer are
eligible. Three scholarships are reserved for physically challenged student, student planning a
career in elementary education and two-year letter winner in baseball or softball.
Each scholarship is for $2,000 and YHS can nominate six students for the scholarships.
Interested students should see Ms McCord and provide a resume for consideration to be
selected as YHS nominees.
Selection based on GPA, rigor or academic program, extent of athletic involvement, athletic
contribution to team(s), other contributions to school, community, church, work, writing skills,
leadership demonstrated, financial need (encompasses any family-perceived financial need).

The Buick Achiever’s Scholarship Program
Criteria: academic achievement and financial need, participation and leadership in community
and school activities, work experience and interest in pursuing a career in the automotive or
related industries.
Special consideration will be given to: first generation college, female, minority, military veteran,
or a dependent of military personnel
The majority of the scholarships will be awarded to students majoring in
Engineering/Technology field. This scholarship awards up to $25,000 per year to 100 first time
freshmen renewable for 4 years and one additional year for qualified engineering programs

The Northern Virginia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Scholarship
Criteria: demonstrated economic need by submitting SAR, cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above,
resident of Arlington County, submit two letters of recommendation (counselor/teacher and
community leader), and written essay of 300-500 words.

Wells Fargo Citizenship Award
Each VHSL school may nominate one male and one female student who has participated in
creative writing, debate, drama, forensics, magazine, newspaper, scholastic bowl, yearbook,
leaders conference, and all Varsity sports.
Criteria: senior graduating and has participated in at least one above activities, contribution to
family, school and community, promotion of good citizenship
Interested students should see Ms McCord and submit an award/activities resume.

The Allstate Foundation/VHSL Achievement Award
This is a nominating scholarship. YHS can nominate four students, one per category, male
athlete, female athlete, one for academic activities participant and one courageous
achievement (overcome incredible odds to make significant contributions to athletic and/or
academic activities).
Criteria: minimum GPA of 3.0, won at least one Varsity letter or academic award, involvement in
other school sponsored activities and outside of school activities, two letters of
recommendation, 500 word essay
Students interested in being nominated for these scholarships should see Ms McCord and turn
in an award/activities resume. Nineteen $1,500 scholarships will be awarded at the state level.

Virginia PTA every child, one voice Scholarship
Criteria: high school senior, plan to pursue a career in teaching or qualify for service with a
youth-serving agency, plan on entering a VA college or university, maintain an average of 2.5
GPA or better, provide evidence of financial need and academic achievement.
Scholarships: 2 for $1,200 and one for $1,000.
Application available from Ms McCord or from www.vapta. Must request a transcript and
provide three letters of recommendation along with the completed application to Ms McCord

The American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) Scholarship
Eligibility: minimum GPA of 3.0 (unweighted), graduating senior, plan to major in business, one
of the physical sciences, technology, engineering or mathematics fields to prepare for a career
in the energy sector, be a member of a class or group of individuals who have been historically
underrepresented in the STEM area.
They will award 3 scholarships – 1st place-$2,500, 2nd place-$2,000, and 3rd place-$1,500
Application is available from Ms McCord and must be submitted with official transcript, official
proof of SAT/ACT scores, two letters of recommendation and completed checklist.

Air Force Officer’s Wives Club of Washington DC Scholarship
Eligibility: senior who is a legal military dependent child of an active duty, reserve, guard,
retired, MIA/POW, deceased officer or enlisted member of the US Air Force and has a minimum
cumulative of 3.25.
Criteria: academic achievement, test scores, extracurricular activities, work history, citizenship,
leadership, awards/honors, reference letters and personal essay.

Vulcan Materials Company Foundation Scholarship
This scholarship is for $8,000 for four years, $2,000 a year renewable
Criteria: financial need, including a financial statement, academic accomplishment and ability,
US citizenship (must have resided in Northern VA for at least four years), extracurricular
activities, preference given to students who plan to attend college in Virginia
This scholarship is a nominating scholarship, interested students should see Ms McCord and
submit an activities resume. A committee will selective our nominee.

Cooley-Moore Scholarship (Ivy Foundation on behalf of Alpha Kappa Sorority
Criteria: academic achievement, financial need, contribution of school and community,
acceptance to two or four year college/university, and three letters of recommendation, and an
interview for the finalists.
Must submit application, official transcript, three letters of recommendation, double-spaced
essay, minimum one page, maximum 2 pages, and proof of financial need.
Application available from Ms McCord. The scholarship is for $2,000 renewable for four years.

Power of the Written Word Scholarship
Criteria-graduating Black/African-American senior, resident of Arlington County, a proven record
of academic service learning in the community, be in good academic standing and a minimum
2.75 GPA, and planning on attending college or university next year
Scholarship is $1,500 and the application (available from Ms McCord), an official transcript,
completed essay (topic: “If you were an educator, how would you propose increasing students’
interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematic (STEM) subjects and careers”)

Greater Washington Employees Relocation Council (GWERC) Scholarship
This is a one-time award of $1,500 which will be awarded to three DC metro students
Eligibility: must have relocated to the DC area, at least 50 miles, after 8th grade graduation.
Selection based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, and your response to the
essay addressing the way they handled challenges associated with relocating.

Arlington County Scholarship Fund for Teachers, Inc
Criteria: graduating senior who has shown a genuine interest in the field of education and plan a
career in that field, such as classroom teaching, early childhood education, special education,
career training, speech therapy, music, educational librarian, etc
Consideration given to potential interest and ability to become successful in the field of
education, scholarship, evidence of school and community service, extracurricular activities,
short essay of personal reasons for desiring to enter the field of education, and explanation of
financial need.

Granville P. Meade Scholarship
This scholarship provides financial assistance to students who have achieved academically but
who are financially unable to attend college and planning on attending college in VA.
The Granville Meade scholars will be selected based on financial need and merit. Applicants will
need to demonstrate academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and good character
determined by letters of recommendation and financial need.
This scholarship is for $2,000, renewable for four years, Application is available from Ms
McCord.

The Virginia Mayflower Society Mildred Ramos Scholarship Fund
Eligibility: high school senior, must have at least a “B” average and sponsored by the Mayflower
society (this will happen with submission of the application).
Applicants must present a brief resume, a copy of their transcript and an original essay of no
more than 1500 words.

Army Officers’ Wives Club of the Greater Washington Area (AOWCGWA)/Fort Myer Thrift Shop
Scholarship
Criteria: child of active duty, retired or deceased US Army Personnel, officer or enlisted, plan on
attending a degree program, HS senior with minimum 3.0 GPA,

Washington Regional Transplant Community (WRTC) Legacy of Life Scholarship
Scholarship is selected based on a no more than 1,000 word essay on the theme “Organ &
Tissue Donation: Persuade Someone to Give the Gift of a Lifetime”.
Scholarship is for $14,000 (National winner), $5,000 for first place, $3,000 second place and 6
honorable mentions for $1,000.

Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund (JMSMSF)
Eligibility: US citizen or permanent resident of US, GPA of 3.0, senior planning on attending 4
year program, demonstrated leadership, abilities through participating in community service or
extra curricular activities and combined adjusted income of the parents cannot exceed $60,000

Donr Vida video-based Scholarship Contest
Create a video no longer than 2 minutes, fiction or non-fiction, in English or Spanish that
explores and debunks one or more myths and misconceptions that surround organ, eye and
tissue donation, explore and explain the facts and statistics and create a call to action.
Scholarship is for first place $3,000, second place $1,500 and 3 honorable mention for $500.

The Arlington-Fairfax Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA) Scholarship
Eligibility: must intent on pursuing a course of study either to an Associate degree or Bachelors
degree in the field of environmental sciences or related field of study
Criteria: financial need, academic achievement, individual character, community achievements
or activities and demonstration of an ability to succeed in colleges

Esperanza Education Fund
Eligibility: graduating senior who was born outside the US or have two parents born outside the
US and enrolling full-time in public college/university
Selection based on qualities traditionally valued/demonstrated by immigrant community: hard
work, resourcefulness, perseverance in the face of adversity, academic achievement, leadership
and commitment to one’s community
Applications available from www.esperanzafund.org. Scholarship awards at least $5,000 and up
to $20,000. Application, two letters of recommendation and essays is the application packet.

Washington Area Chapters of the Order of AHEPA Scholarship
Criteria: must be affiliated with either the AHEPA family or the Greek Orthodox Church,
graduating senior, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and participated in extracurricular activities and/or
lettered or received awards in varsity interscholastic sports.
Students must submit 4 copies of the application, official transcript, test scores, and personal

2014 Northern Virginia B’nai B’rith Sports Scholarships
This scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to graduating male or female athletes entering
college/university fall 2014.
Criteria: senior living in Arlington County, athletic ability (must play on Varsity team), scholarship
(GPA and test scores), community service, Jewish faith

Federal Water Quality Association 2014 National Capital Environmental Scholarship Program
Three scholarships of $2,000 each will be awarded to encourage young people to prepare for
careers in environmental protection by supporting studies leading to a bachelor’s degree in
applicable sciences or engineering
Criteria: academic achievement and, above all, the level of commitment to environmental
protection (essay must reflect environmentally-related studies and /or service, leadership, and
overall presentation – including emphasis in science courses, relevance of program of study and
sincerity of commitment
Must submit application (available from Ms McCord), school transcript, test scores, reference
letter(s), preferably from a science, environmental class/club teacher, list of extra-curricular
activities, and essay

Commonwealth Circle Scholarship
Criteria: senior with minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0), financial need, US citizen,
involvement in extracurricular and community service, and planning to pursue an education in
community or public service.
Application is available from Ms McCord, also official transcript, two letters of recommendation
and 300-500 word essay “Why My Community is Important to Me”
Scholarship will be for a minimum of $2,000 (maybe more)

Jewish Social Service Agency Scholarships
1. Morton A Gibson Memorial Scholarship – must be high school senior, Jewish resident of
Metro area, US citizen or working toward citizenship. This award is for significant
volunteer service with the local Jewish community. This scholarship is for $2,500
2. Max and Emmy Dreyfuss Jewish Undergraduate Scholarship Fund – must be Jewish
citizen of metro area, US citizen or working toward, accepted into four year program.
Scholarships range from $1,000 - $2,000. Decision based primarily on financial need
3. Jewish Educational Loan Fund – must be Jewish resident of metro area, enrolled in
undergraduate program, US citizen or working towards. This interest-free loan, up to
$2,000 is based on financial need.
