An Index to Digging Into History

Archaeology in New Zealand special issue 47(4) of 2004 contained a series of
nostalgic and historical papers about the first 50 years of the Archaeological
Association, the volume entitled, Digging Into History.
The volume was edited by Matthew Campbell and we owe him a great deal for this
achievement of coercion and editing.
This index to people and sites in the volume was created to enhance its historical
value.
I have indexed contributing authors once only to their piece - rendered (Author) rather
than every self-reference within it. I have indexed people where they appear in
primary historical context but not as referenced authors writing about some aspect at a
later date. I have indexed research areas as well as sites. I have not indexed the sites in
Helen Leach’s great list of conference field-trips as the trips were not primarily
research driven. I have been selective about references to distinguished academic
forebears, looking for a direct connection to let them in. I have not indexed the photo
captions as to the people pictured but I have indexed the photos as sites where they
depict sites. The figures list in the volume includes all the identified people. I have
not indexed people thanked in “Acknowledgements” sections explicit or otherwise.
In keeping with the intimate character of the volume people are mostly indexed with
their First names of everyday use. In a few cases I have added these where I know
them but for some people who seemingly were always referred to by title or by their
initials I have retained that form from the original references. Given an option of a
diminutive I have tried to follow what seems to be most common in the references, or
failing that my memory.
The original mostly lacked site numbers – this does too.
