CU Professor authors two books
George Edward Stanley, D. Litt., Professor of African and Middle-Eastern Languages and Linguistics, has
authored two new books for the youth market, both set for release this summer. “Davy Crockett” will be
released in August 2008 as part of the Sterling Biographies® series from Sterling Publishing. “Frederick
Douglass Abolitionist Hero” will be published in July 2008 by Simon & Schuster as part of their Childhood of
Famous Americans series. The latter follows Stanley’s earlier titles in this series, “Geronimo”, “Andrew
Jackson,” “Harry S Truman,” “Mr. Rogers,” “Crazy Horse”, and “Dwight D. Eisenhower.”
In addition to writing more than 100 books for young people, Dr. Stanley has written more than 200 short
stories in American, British, Irish and South African magazines and linguistics articles in major international
journals. He is also the author of “Writing Short Stories for Young People,” published by Writer’s Digest
Books.
A sample of his nationally acclaimed titles include Spinetinglers, a horror series for middle-graders that he
helped developed, writing many of the titles using the pseudonym M.T. Coffin, and Scaredy Cats, a series
of first chapter books for first, second and third graders published by Simon & Schuster. In 2002, Dr.
Stanley developed a series for Random House about a third grader who’s a secret agent featuring the
character Adam Sharp. He has also authored titles for the legendary teen mystery series Nancy Drew as
well as the Hardy Boys mystery series.
After receiving a B.A. and M.A. from Texas Tech University, Dr. Stanley earned his Doctor Litterarum from
the University of Port Elizabeth (now Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University) in South Africa. He began
his career at Cameron in 1970. Awards and honors include a Fulbright Professorship to the University
N’Djamena, Chad; National Member of the Year from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and
Illustrators; and induction into the Oklahoma Writers Hall of Fame.
