The Calwell Family Cemetery on Copeland’s Hill

The Greenbrier
White Sulphur Springs
West Virginia
Buried in this cemetery are members of the Calwell family who owned and
managed The Greenbrier for over sixty years in the nineteenth century.
James Calwell deserves to be called the Founder of White Sulphur Springs
because he transformed what was a small and isolated frontier “watering
place” when he moved here from Maryland in 1818 into the most
fashionable resort in the southern states by his death in 1851. His son,
William Bowyer Calwell, managed the resort with his father and served as
the proprietor until his death in 1881. Both men and their wives are buried
here as well as their descendents up to 1946.
The cemetery is located behind Copeland Hill unit #9
