Emory University
2011-2012 Great Works Seminar
Book of Job
This Great Works seminar will read and discuss the Book of Job, a classic of world literature that explores
fundamental questions about the nature of the world, the basis for moral action, and the quest to find meaning in
inexplicable suffering. The character of Job has been praised throughout the centuries both as a model of patient
endurance and as a rebel who dares to confront even God in his quest for understanding. We will use the
translation by Robert Alter, who brings to English the stunning artistry of the Hebrew poet.
The seminar will be moderated by Candler School of Theology’s Carol Newsom, Charles Howard Candler Professor
of Old Testament and will meet on Monday, February 13th, 20th, and 27th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at The Bill
and Carol Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry.
Everyone from the Atlanta community is welcome and invited to join us for this free seminar. For further
