OVINGHAM Town & parish. Includes Eltringham, Hedly, Hedly Woodside,
Mickley, Ovington, Prudhoe Castle. Bounded by the parishes of Stamfordham,
Heddon on the Wall & the Bywells. Separated from Co D/H by the Milkhouse
Burn.
Thomas of Ovingham died 1590, will proved 1592. Son John the elder (and his son
Thomas) & John the younger, son Thomas, George Jopling, sons Andrew & Anthony and
Richard Jopling.
John Jopling 1592. of Ovingham ( John was `John the Elder` from the Will above)
Brother John & brother Andrew and Andrew`s son Andrew, John`s children & Andrew`s
children, brother Thomas. Brother John to have George Marshall alias Jopling during his
minority (bequest to Margaret Marshall). Brother Anthony.
John Jopling of MICKLEY, Parish of Ovingham, 1632. Wife Eleanor, son Andrew,
Robert, Alexander Pg in Newcastle and son Charles his lease in Mickley. Thomas
Jopling is buying his lease in Hedley Woods. Wits. Thos Pg & Alexander Pg. Andrew &
Robert to share the lease in Hedley Woods if Thomas backs out. In 1664 both Thomas &
John were of Hedley in regard to the Hearth Tax & in 1695 Anthony Pg s/o Robert, yeo
of Hedley Woods was apprenticed butcher. In 1657 Alexander of Leadgate was buried
Leadgate Farm was on the S. side of the gate. (Leadgate is 1+ miles from Hedley Woods.
It is 2.7ml from Whittonstall and 2.3 miles from Newlands. 4mls from Medomsley,
3.3ml from Ovingham, 2.9 mls from Mickley, 4mls from Ryton, 2ml from Broadoak, 3ml
from Ebchester, 1ml from Chopwell, 2mls from Milkwellburn)
Robert Pn of Pruddoe Castle OVINGHAM died 1638, his widow Dorothy signed the
bond.

1679 Andrew buried. 1682 a John Jopling was buried.
John of MICKLEY 1693. Eldest son Andrew the farm on the south side of the gate and
son John the farm at the north side of the gate. I give to my son John my lease in Hedley
Woods (he to pay to his grandmother, Elizabeth £4 a year). Dau Mary & Dorothy- under
age. Nephew Phillie Milburn. Brother Richard & Edward Browell to be tutors for his
daus.
Wife Margaret- nee Millburne m.1664 Newburn? Mgt. Died 1694. as did his son
Andrew (an Andrew was buried April 16th1694)?.
He had a second son John born after his death in 1693
(his mother, Elizabeth was buried Ovingham 1709. His dau. Dorothy, neice of Ed
Browell was buried 29/12/1695, as was Jo (John the younger)- buried chapelry of
Newborough.
John`s brothers were Richard of Wols. Park- will 1714 & Robert of Ushaw.
A John of Mickley, then Cornheath voted in 1710 & 1715- he was a freeholder in
Mickley. On June 9th, 1702 John m. Ann Jopling and their son John was baptised
30.3.1703 she died April 16th., 1703 & in 1704 John Jopling m. Mgt Pattison, same yr.
Jn s/o John of Leadgate bapt., 1707 Ann, 1709 Samuel, 1711 Catherine.
NB a Samuel, illegit s/o Jn & Susannah Wood was bapt 7.1.1705.

John Jopling of Wellburn OVINGHAM (born 1641 Exch Deps 1701) 1712.
Dau Isabel m. Wm Eltringham 1699 Ovingham, she died before him, leaving kids. He
married Isabel Harrison 1704 Ovingham (? 2nd marriage), she d. just before he made his
will. He was buried March 16th. His sons William & Thomas.

Andrew Jopling 1598. (To be buried Lanchester- burial Feb 24th 1599) Son Richard &
his daughter, son in law Nicholas Labourne, also Robert Labourne, son John & his
children, servants John & Isabel Joplin, Cuthbert Joplin, son John. Sons Richard & John
to have the lease in Hileyfield, Muggleswick Park equally between them. Daughter Jane
Labourne. Elinor Labourne. All the rem. of his goods and chattels to Andrew, son of his
son John, who is also to be sole executor.
Cold Rowley (very close to Muggleswick Park- adjoins Hileyfield).
John 1621. To be buried Lanchester. Wife Agnes and six daughters. Sons Richard,
Robert, Thomas, Michael, Andrew. To son Andrew all the copyhold lands. Thomas to
be apprenticed. To son Michael, his part of the maynes field. Richard Jopline owes him
10/-. He leaves 4 sheep to Thomas Jopling of Wolsingham Park. Son Andrew to have
his farm in Muggleswick Park.

Lunshouse & tithes in Medomsley parish and his wife & children. Son John Jopling his
lands & tenements at Mainsfield near Cold Rowley- wife & children. Sarah Millbourn,

Robert was `of Thimble` & he died Stanhope 1620. Robert`s sons Cuthbert & George
were also in Stanhope.

Mickley and to his son by his first wife (see will 1693 Jn of Mick). Left to John Jopling
of the Leadgate. Edw Pg & Jacob of the Longridge. Robert Pg of Esh £5. To Robert
Jopling of Holmminton Hall 3yrs rent of his land at Hollinghall & the pasture in the Park
quarter. Thomas Jopling of Hollinghall £10. All his lease land in Wols Park to son of Jn
of Mickley by his first wife, failing that to go to John Jopling`s eldest son of the
Leadgate.
Richard Jopling was married to Margaret Jopling (1680- she died 1706). I do not believe
they had any children, but some of these bequests are to her relatives. I believe her father
was Robert Pg cordwainer and she had a brother George bapt 1646 (wits at bapt Samuel
& Jn). George m. Eliz Wilam at Tynemouth 1674 and had Edward 1676, Eliz 1679, John
1682 (of Leadgate?) George 1683, Ruth 1687 and Jacob 1690
