Job Description Job Title: Museum Assistant (part-time) Responsible to: Museum Curator and Manager Supervisory Responsibilities: None Hours: 14.8 hours per week, two days weekly: Wednesdays and Fridays. Salary: £15,000-16,000, depending on experience, pro-rata, per annum, 12 month contract in the first instance Post Objective To assist with maintaining, documenting and developing The Peace Museum’s collections and to provide visitor services at the museum. To maintain the operation and distribution of the travelling exhibition programme and assist with the general administration of The Peace Museum. General Office Administration 1. Process mail. 2. Process monetary donations and handle correspondence with regard to donations. 3. Respond to general inquiries and assist the provision of public information services (telephone, postal, email and face to face) relating to the Museum’s collections and travelling exhibitions in liaison with relevant staff. 4. Provide general maintenance and cleaning of the galleries, office, storage spaces and toilet areas. 5. Forward invoices and payments received to Museum Treasurer. 6. Reconcile the general ledger. Travelling Exhibitions 1. Respond to public enquiries about the museum’s nine travelling exhibitions 2. Schedule the lending of travelling exhibitions. 3. Post and collect travelling exhibitions. 4. Clean the travelling exhibitions upon their return. 5. To monitor and forward payment for the mailing of the travelling exhibitions. Collections Management 1. Maintain the documentation of the collection to SPECTRUM standard, creating computer records using Modes XML, and entering the collection into the accession register. 2. Create a digital photographic record to be placed alongside the computerised documentation of significant objects in the collection, and to reconcile photographs with documentation. 3. Mark the objects with their relevant accession numbers and record location of items on documentation and maintain the location index of the collections. 4. Prepare items for storage and assign space for item in storage. 5. Monitor and keep a running log of the environmental conditions in the galleries, office and storage space. 6. Consider the condition of objects, and advise the Museum Curator and Manager of any condition concerns, transferring conservation requirements to the documentation. 7. Identify material outside the acquisition policy criteria and make recommendations to the Museum Curator and Manager regarding disposal of such material according to museum policy. 8. Ensure the collection is appropriately displayed, cleaned and stored with regard to conservation requirements. 9. Assist with public enquiries regarding the collection wherever possible and to direct enquiries to Museum Curator and Manager. 10. Be prepared to undertake training necessary to carry out these duties. Visitor Services 1. Meet and greet visitors and interact with visitors. 2. Monitor and maintain literature supply of handouts, brochures, etc. 3. Open and close the gallery premises. Other 1. Liaise with other museum staff and volunteers as required. 2. Assist in the preparation of information and reports and attend meetings as required. 3. Perform other duties as required. Demonstrate excellent communications skills (verbal and written) at a variety of levels. Demonstrate an interest in our collections and their background. Demonstrate experience of working to given deadlines. Demonstrate computer literacy and organisational skills. Be willing to accept relevant training. Demonstrate experience of working on their own a X b X X X X X X X X X X Required Skills: The successful candidate will have some customer service background and a keen interest in museums and history. The role requires a high level of self motivation and a passion for working with the public. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential along with the ability to display knowledge of and/or interest in current practices and policies relating to museums. You will have the ability to work on your own initiative as well as being a team player. Candidates must have the ability to prioritise workload within a multitasked environment. It is desirable for the applicant to have a museum-related degree or equivalent experience. The post would operate out of two separate sites in Bradford city centre, the visitor gallery being located on the second level of a building without a lift and up some 60 steps.
