Risk Assessments for School Visits
We strongly encourage teachers planning visits to conduct a preliminary visit to Bradford
Industrial Museum to plan activities and to make their own Risk Assessment of the
museum site.
Bradford Industrial Museum and Horses at work occupies a Victorian mill building, houses
and mill yard. The following are the areas which groups may visit:
The Street
Cobbled road, tram tracks, stone paving, kerbstones, steps, links to both
entrance and exit roads to the museum used by vehicular traffic and horsedrawn vehicles.

Gaythorne Row and Back-to-Back Houses
Cobbled road, tram tracks, stone paving, kerbstones, alley-ways, stone paved
back yards, internal staircases to viewing gallery with large glass windows,
steps.

Horse Emporium
Quarry tiled floor, raised viewing platform, glass windows, traditional horse
food preparation machinery (non-operational), glass display cases.

Mill Manager’s House
Steps, staircase, banisters, barriers, barrier ropes.

Stables and Blacksmith’s Forge
Horses, stable equipment, glass-fronted harness cupboard, regular working
demonstrations and rides.

The Mill including the Reception Area
Glass doors, display cases, stone steps and staircases, barriers, stone floors,
operational machinery (behind barriers), regular working demonstrations, old
wooden floors, cast iron pillars, props, rugs and seating, when required, for
drama performances and workshops.

Third Floor Education Areas in the Mill –
Lecture Room
Swing doors, carpet, screens, display cases, chairs and tables, wooden display
platform, audio and video equipment, occasional electric extension cables,
small inward-opening windows, props, rugs, handling objects and seating, when
required, for drama performances and workshops.
Victorian Schoolroom
Class-fronted cabinets, ink, old wooden floors, benches, dip pens.
The Lobby Area
Occasional storage of glass-fronted cabinets and other equipment.
