DUTIES OF THE POST a) Principal Responsibilities: Duties as appropriate to the grade of the post and under the direction of the Consultant responsible involving the care of babies in Special Care Nursery and Delivery Suite at the John Radcliffe. Responsibility for babies on the post natal wards. Attendance on all ward rounds and at regular (weekly) meetings with Obstetricians and at monthly perinatal review meetings with Obstetricians. Flying squad visits as required. Attendance at Post Mortems and at special procedures. Training: There are 9 SHOs available for each 6 month period. All posts are approved for paediatric training. Postgraduate training recognition is available. Recognised for DCH. There is informal teaching in post-graduate paediatric research seminars with various lectures at the John Radcliffe. b) Aims of the Post in Broad Terms: During this appointment the SHOs should learn to assess babies at birth in the Delivery Suite and resuscitate them appropriately. Experience will be obtained on the post-natal wards examining low risk infants, identifying common problems and dealing with them, and communicating with the family. The SHOs will also receive instruction in all aspects of intensive care of sick newborn infants, especially ventilatory and nutritional management. As well as the problems of extreme prematurity, birth asphyxia, and congenital abnormalities, the SHOs will see babies with neonatal surgical and cardiological problems. SPECIALTY: The Neonatal Unit is situated in the Women’s Centre of the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust where over 6,500 babies are born annually. The hospital is the Regional Centre for Neonatal Intensive Care and the Obstetric Service (Professor, two Readers, five NHS Consultants, a Professor of Obstetric Medicine and a Lecturer in Ultrasonography) provides a comprehensive service including care for high risk pregnancies. A GP Obstetric unit is incorporated within the hospital. Mothers are transferred antenatally for specialist care from the other Districts in the Oxford Region (where approximately 35,000 babies are born annually) and sick newborn infants are transported postnatally by Flying Squad to the John Radcliffe. There are 31 cots in the Nursery, of which 16 are designated and fully equipped for Intensive Care/HDU. Over 120 infants are ventilated annually for more than 1500 ventilator days. The Neonatal medical staff are responsible for all the babies on the lying-in wards as well as for the resuscitation of babies in the Delivery Suite.
