LAKEWOOD CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Assistant Coach – High School Head Coach-Middle School Assistant Coach- Middle School POSITION TYPE: ECES Contract QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrates good moral character. Competent to coach an ECES position as evidenced by: The ability to work effectively with pupils. Knowledge of the activity program as documented by successful completion of a college or university course on the direction, supervision or coaching of such activity program; or successful experience in such activity program or other activity programs. Knowledge of applicable rules and regulations as established by the Lakewood Board of Education and local , state and/or national governing agencies. Knowledge of the health and safety related aspects of the activity program. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. RESPONSIBLE TO: Head Coach – High School and Athletic Director SALARY: Compensation to be fixed as per current negotiated collective bargaining agreement. Job Description – Assistant Coach – High School GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The assistant/head middle school coach of any particular sport shall be responsible for supporting the total athletic program. The assistant/head middle school coach shall become familiar with and adhere to the rules and regulations of the Lakewood Board of Education, the OHSAA, and the Southwestern Conference. The assistant/head middle school coach is responsible for performing duties as assigned by the head coach. The assistant/head middle school coach shall, through appearance, personal speech and actions, exemplify the highest type of role model for the community, his/her squad and coaching staff. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Attends all staff meetings when required by the head coach. Reports all injuries to the head coach, athletic trainer and athletic director and follows the procedure for reporting injuries. Practices acceptable personal conduct before, during and after games and practices. Assists in the supervision of athletes. Teaches the philosophy, fundamentals, techniques and style of play as prescribed by the high school head coach. Performs proper athletic training, first aid, and safety as required. Complies with all other duties as requested by the head coach of his/her sport. 2 Job Description – Assistant Coach – High School Assists the head coach in the completion of the required reports. Assists the head coach in requirements providing for the health and safety of each player. Aides the head coach in the selection of the squad. Maintains membership in professional organizations and attends clinics and in-service when approved. Promotes positive community relationships and attends and supports the parent booster groups in the activities that they undertake for the benefit of the Lakewood athletic program. Promotes and supports participation in multiple sports to the athletes involved in their program. Demonstrates loyalty to the head coach and team. In the absence of the head coach, assumes all responsibilities designated to the head coach as directed by the athletic director and building principal. Develops athletes to the highest degree of skill possible. Assumes responsibility for the conduct of contestants. Accompanies team in buses to and from all athletic events. Gives careful attention to all injuries and reports them in writing to the head coach and/or athletic trainer. Completes the requirements of attendance at sports medicine clinics and CPR/AED, Fundamentals of Coaching, Sportsmanship and First Aid for Coaches courses. Completes all requirements to obtain a current Pupil Activity Permit from the Ohio Department of Education. Assists in preparing the facility for interscholastic contests. 3 Job Description – Assistant Coach – High School Insures at all times that players are wearing equipment that is safe and that meets national standards. Assists in the planning of special events: assemblies, parent’s night, boosters drive, etc. Stresses sportsmanship on the part of student body, players and community. Assists in the instruction of the squad members in the rules of his/her sport. Improves his/her professional skills by attending clinics and maintaining membership in professional organizations. Instructs the team in the proper use of equipment. Assists with ensuring their athletes assigned to athletic study table after school attend the required sessions and complete required hours. Attends the required OHSAA rules interpretation meetings. Performs such other duties as assigned by the head coach and athletic director. EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the head coach and reviewed by the athletic director. 4
