The National Youth Council of Ireland, the representative body for voluntary youth
organisations, wishes to appoint the following:
Communications Officer (4 day week-12 month contract)
The Job
NYCI’s Communications Officer supports NYCI’s engagement in the public arena.
Reporting to the Assistant Director, the post holder monitors developments affecting
young people and the youth sector, interfaces with the media and provides an
information service to NYCI and its member organisations.
The Person
The successful candidate will have 3 years paid or voluntary experience in a related
field. Experience of working with the media and/or in the provision of information is
essential.
He/she will have excellent organisational, communications and
interpersonal skills and be dependable and flexible.

Job Description
NYCI Communications Officer
Reporting to: NYCI Assistant Director with responsibility for Advocacy and
Representation.
Location: NYCI, 3 Montague Street, Dublin 2.
Purpose
The purpose of the position of Communications Officer is to provide a comprehensive
communications service to NYCI and to support NYCI’s engagement in the public
arena. The Officer monitors developments affecting young people and the youth
sector, interfaces with the media and provides an information service to NYCI and its
member organisations. The role supports the advocacy work and campaigns
undertaken by the organisation. It also involves contributing to the implementation of
the NYCI Strategic Plan and annual communications plan and the development and
implementation of effective internal and external communications to members and
stakeholders.
Responsibilities
The Communications Officer will have the following functions:
General
 Implement the Communications Programme of NYCI.
 Contribute to and implement an ongoing communications strategy for NYCI.
 Responsible for organisation of press conferences/launches and contribute to the
organisation and running of key NYCI events, such as the annual conference.
 Contribute to the design, co-ordination and running of relevant NYCI campaigns
 Manage communications budget line
 Responsible for the commissioning and production of all publications
Media
 Act as the immediate interface and build relationships between the media and
NYCI.
 Monitor the treatment of youth sector/youth issues in the public and political
arenas and respond, as appropriate.
 Draft and issue press releases, as directed by the Assistant Director.
 Arrange media interviews for appropriate NYCI personnel
 Represent NYCI in the media and other relevant arenas, as directed by the
Assistant Director.
 Monitor NYCI’s public profile, including its media presence and performance
 Contribute to the ongoing development of NYCI social media presence

Information
 Generate and disseminate appropriate promotional information and materials,
including leaflets and presentations.
 Contribute to maintaining NYCI’s website and presence.
 Promote NYCI, its positions and its member organisations at relevant events held
by outside bodies.
 Co-ordinate NYCI’s engagement with youth information policy and practice and
liaise with relevant bodies concerned with youth information, as appropriate.
 Deal with general queries from the general public, member organisations, etc.
 Co-ordinate, edit and produce NYCI’s Annual Report, ezine Clár na nÓg and
other publications as required.
 Monitor the media on developments affecting young people and the youth sector
and disseminate relevant information to NYCI personnel as appropriate.
 Prepare briefings and other materials on youth matters for individuals and
organisations outside NYCI.
 Identify funding opportunities for NYCI and assist in NYCI’s response to these

 Liaise with appropriate personnel within member organisations on press and

 Organise and deliver media and public relations training for relevant personnel
from NYCI and member organisations as required.
