NO. R-155. HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING TAYLOR HORN ON WINNING THE 2007 VERMONT CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC BEE. (H.C.R.116) Offered by: Representative Marek of Newfane Whereas, geographic education is an important component in the modern educational curriculum as students prepare to enter an increasingly interconnected world, and Whereas, the National Geographic Bee provides an exciting opportunity for students in middle school grades to pursue an in-depth exploration of the world’s geography and participate in a national scholastic competition in which the breadth of their geographic knowledge is scrutinized thoroughly, and Whereas, student participation in this National Geographic Society project is facilitated through individual school and state geography bees, and Whereas, on Friday, March 30, the Vermont state championship of the National Geographic Bee was held on the University of Vermont campus, and Whereas, after multiple rounds of intense and obscure inquiries that touched on many nations throughout the world, Taylor Horn of Townshend and an eighth grader at Leland & Gray Union High School, was declared the winner, and Whereas, his final correct response demonstrated the detailed scope of his geographic studies when he stated that the Jin Mao Tower, which contains the world’s highest hotel rooms, is located in Shanghai, China, and www.leg.state.vt.us NO. R-155 Page 2 Whereas, in recognition of his first-place ranking, Taylor Horn was awarded a $100 prize and an all-expense paid trip to our nation’s capital to represent Vermont in the National Geographic Bee, and to compete for a $25,000.00 college scholarship, and Whereas, Taylor Horn’s success in this educationally meritorious competition can motivate other Vermont youngsters to participate in the National Geographic Bee, now therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives: That the General Assembly congratulates Taylor Horn on winning the 2007 Vermont championship of the National Geographic Bee and wishes him the best of success in the national competition in Washington, D.C., and be it further Resolved: That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Taylor Horn at Leland & Gray Union High School in Townshend. www.leg.state.vt.us
