INTERNATIONAL WATERCOLOUR BIENNIAL
“BALTIC BRIDGES. Resonance”
Kaunas, Lithuania
2014
The theme (conception) of the 5th International Watercolor Biennial “Baltic Bridges” is
RESONANCE.
Resonance, according to the Oxford Advanced Learners’s Dictionary, usually mean the sound
produced in an object by sound waves from another object; the power to bring images, feelings, memories
etc into the mind of the reader, listener, etc; the images, feelings, memories, etc. produced in this way.
In physics, resonance is the tendency of a system to oscillate with greater amplitude at some
frequencies than at others. Frequencies at which the response amplitude is a relative maximum are known
as the system's resonant frequencies, or resonance frequencies. At these frequencies, even small periodic
driving forces can produce large amplitude oscillations, because the system stores vibrational energy.
That means, first of all there must be a “sound” (or picture), than it will be possible to have an
echo (resonance). But not only that.
According to the explanation in physics and especially if we look at works of world known author
and entrepreneur from Japan Masaru Emoto, best known for his claims that human consciousness has an
effect on the molecular structure of water (book The Message from Water: The Message from Water is
Telling Us to Take a Look at Ourselves), we can find that our feelings, memories and emotions can
resonate in the water.
What is watercolour? First of all it is water. Then pigment, spreading on paper, shows us how the
artist resonates with surrounding environment. By the way, the biggest part of human body, as well as of
our planet, is filled with water.
Therefore we believe we will have good opportunity to look carefully and understand what traces
watercolour can leave on the surface of our contemporary culture and cultural history as well as in the life
of the individual artist. Imagine a pebble thrown in a huge body of water (sea or lake)… We hope that
ripples and echoes reach us from all countries located around the Baltic Sea, as well as from those that are
a bit further, but has its own waters - at least sufficient for watercolour.
Parts of the 5th International Watercolour Biennial “Baltic Bridges. Resonance” are:
Exposition Nr. 1.
Place – Kaunas Picture Gallery of M. K. Ciurlionis National Art Museum
The selection will be held in two categories:
1) artworks made using watercolour technique by professional painters
2) artworks made using other water-based techniques or other creative materials, which can be
linked (associated, “looks like”) with watercolour.
