Construction Curriculum Framework School Based
Apprenticeship Pathway
17.1
Construction – School-based Apprenticeship (240 indicative hours)
Purpose
The purpose of this course is to provide school-based apprentices with the opportunity to
gain credit towards Certificate III qualifications in the construction industry and unit credit
towards their HSC.
Course eligibility
It is available to students who meet the following requirements:
participation in an approved school-based apprenticeship training contract in
one of the following:






Certificate III in Bricklaying/Blocklaying
Certificate III in Carpentry
Certificate III in Concreting
Certificate III in Painting and Decorating
Certificate III in Roof Tiling
Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling.
Before offering the Construction – School-based Apprenticeship course, schools should
ensure that the RTO undertaking delivery has the scope to deliver the relevant qualification
and/or relevant units of competency.
Course structure
Construction – School-based Apprenticeship comprises 10 compulsory units of competency
and an elective pool containing 72 units of competency listed in Table 7.
Details of the compulsory units of competency, including HSC requirements and advice, are
included in Part B of the Syllabus.
Details of the elective units of competency listed in Table 7 are available in the General
Construction Training Package (BCG03) or at www.ntis.gov.au
Construction – School-based Apprenticeship (240 indicative hours) course is accredited for a
total of four units at the Preliminary and/or HSC level.
Course requirements

Students must attempt:
- ALL compulsory units of competency
- AND a selection of units of competency from the elective pool to a minimum value of
75 indicative hours.

Mandatory work placement hour requirements for this course are met through the on-thejob training component of the school-based apprenticeship.

An external written Higher School Certificate examination will be conducted for this course.
This examination is optional. In the year they will complete the course, students will specify
whether or not they choose to undertake the external written examination (refer to Sections
11.4 and 11.5).

This unit of competency has been imported from the Rural Production Training Package (RTE03). It can
contribute towards Certificate III qualifications.

The RTO may substitute the equivalent unit of competency provided all examinable aspects of the original
unit of competency are covered as outlined in Section 11.5 of this document and the unit itself in Part B of
the Syllabus.

Construction – School-based Apprenticeship Specialisation (60 or 120
indicative hours)
Purpose
The purpose of this course is to provide school-based apprentices with the opportunity to
gain further credit towards Certificate III qualifications in the construction industry and unit
credit towards their HSC.
Course Eligibility
It is available to students who meet the following requirements:
participation in an approved school-based apprenticeship training contract in one
of the following:






Certificate III in Bricklaying/Blocklaying
Certificate III in Carpentry
Certificate III in Concreting
Certificate III in Painting and Decorating
Certificate III in Roof Tiling
Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling
and
are currently enrolled in, or have completed, the Construction – School-based
Apprenticeship (240 indicative hours).
The maximum number of Preliminary and/or HSC units available from the school-based
apprenticeship pathway of this Framework is six units. That is, courses can total up to 360
hours. In addition to courses within the framework students may undertake locally designed
Board Endorsed VET courses drawing from the General Construction Training Package
(BCG03). Such courses may provide additional HSC credit for students.
Before offering the Construction – School-based Apprenticeship Specialisation, schools
should ensure that the RTO undertaking delivery has the scope to deliver the relevant
qualification and/or relevant units of competency.

competency drawn from the Construction – School-based Apprenticeship (240 indicative
hours) course (listed in Table 7) not previously attempted by students.

The Construction – School-based Apprenticeship Specialisation (60 indicative hours) course
is accredited for one unit at the Preliminary or HSC level. The Construction – School-based
Apprenticeship Specialisation (120 indicative hours) course is accredited for a total of two
units at the Preliminary and/or HSC level.
