Topographic Maps Project – Class copy please do not write on this
sheet of paper.
Materials:
Glue, 3 sheets of construction paper, 2 sheets of white paper, 10
marshmallows, scissors
Model of your mountain:
Your model must include the following items:
1. Mountain with 5 levels (see demo)
2. Steep slope on one side
3. Gentle slope on another side
4. No bigger than one sheet of paper
5. Stream running down one side of the mountain
6. Pond or a lake
7. Mountain levels are made out of construction paper, marshmallows are
used to raise the paper (make it 3D)
Paragraph Description about your mountain
Your paragraph must include the following items:
1. Description of how your mountain was made (boundary type, volcano?)
2. Name of your mountain and how it received that name (for example,
Chimney Rock is named so because it is shaped like a chimney)
3. What type of activities that occur on the mountain (churches, schools, ski
slopes, volcanic activity, trains). In other words, describe the town that is
located on it.
Topographic Map of your Mountain
Your map must include the following items:
1. Contour lines that are the same as your levels on the model (you may
want to trace them). Be sure to include the stream and pond on your
map!!!
2. Index contours (lines that have the elevation marked)
3. Compass to show north, south, east and west
4. Must fit on 1 sheet of white paper
5. Legend/key with at least 5 features (school, airport, etc). Look at your
starter for ideas. These areas also should be marked on your map.
